i have a dummy question.... is the 2004 ranger xlt 4x4 the same with 2004 level II?,... OR how can i find out what type i have? i just bought a 2004 ranger, 4x4 v6. 4.o liter engine.... thx

its different than the level II, IIRC the level two is geared differently and has a factory Limited Slip in the rear.

IF you have an FX4 Level II there will be a sticker on the back of the box. Also I think they came with upgraded wheel and tire packages, suspension, and axles (REAR at least).

Me thinks you just have a good ol' regular Ranger.

Others here will tell you for sure what the exact differences are.

The level II's have the 31 spline 8.8 axle instead of the 28 spline and they also have the torsion limited slip rear differential. I am pretty sure they used better shocks. They also use a smaller 15" tire and wheel but they use alcoa wheels with BFG tires... Or that is what it USED to include.

BlackBeauty84, I have that bumper sticker on my Ranger.

My 88 Ranger Super Cab 4X4, 2.9EFI auto has a factory 2" lift and HAD a clutched posi (now has a Richmond Lock Rite locker) is this a IIRC and where exactly is that sticker?

The L2 came with the upgraded 31 spline axle, torsen gear driven limited slip, Bilstein shocks, 31" BFG A/T tires, 15" Alcoa rims, and only in some years a manual transfer case.

If it has an XLT emblem on it, it is definately not a FX4, OR FX4 level II because those packages are different. If you have carpet it is likely an XLT unless its an Edge.

In later model stuff (at least 2006 on up) the models start at XL, then XLT, then Sport, then FX4 and then FX4 level II.

The previous post to mine is right. There is also a third skid plate on the FX4 level II's over the XLT and FX4 if I remember that correctly.

Edit- Axle code 97 is a 4:10 non-limited slip according to my service manual.
