Hi,
New member here, hope I can contribute to the forum, but for now just looking for some sage advice from you guys (or gals?)

I couldn't find this on the search, surely I am not the only one....

I have a 1994 Ranger with 2wd 4cyl manual....the trans locked up on
the previous owner while he was driving.....hmmmm. he said it needed
a trans, (was probably running 80-90 weight, I presume...?) anyway I
bought it like this, not running, and just found a 1993 (supposedly) ranger 2wd that I ripped the tranny out of this a.m..... However, upon reflection, I seem to remember the 1994 having a mechanical speedo...and I know FOR SURE that the one I got out of the 1993 is an electric drive for speedo.. My 1994 is 70 miles away at work, so I can't run out and look at it. IF this is a fact and the 1993 was really a later model===forgot to get the VIN off of it, and the owner said it was a 1993, couldn't open the door b/c of the wreck to check the door tag.

What kind of problem will this be---could the tail shaft just be swapped out if needed to make sure the speedo works....??? I did cut the wires and their connectors off of the junk truck's harness.....just in case??

Also, how the heck to remove the hose for the slave cylinder, couldn't figure it out on the wrecked truck and the owner just (AAARGH!!!) cut it (about 6 inches from bellhousing)with a hacksaw before I could do anything.

Further, any other advice before I swap the trannies, (luckily the junk truck had a NEW clutch package, which he threw in for the same price of $150, which I thought was a GOOD DEAL!!!!???)

TIA, joel in Louisville, KY

Update, got the VIN number from the wrecked truck,

Maybe it really wasn't a 1993??

anyway here goes

1FTCR14A9VPA56304

i THOUGHT that the guy would've known what year the truck was, but
I am thinking that this might be a 1997? b/c my 1995 Chev has a vin
tenth letter of S IIRC, presuming T would be 1996, U is skipped? V would
then be 1997???

If this is true, then what are the implications with the 1997 and the 1994 speedo drive issues......TIA (again) joel :icon_thumby:

OK))) it is a 1997 (the junked wreck that donated the M5OD)

Decoded Data
Region: 1 1 North America
Country: 1-2 1F U.S.A.
Manufacturer: 2-3 FT Ford
Model Specific: 4-8 CR14A Unknown
Check Digit: 9 9 Valid
Year: 10 V 1997
Assembly Plant: 11 P P
Serial Number: 12-17 A56304 A56304

Just found this online decoder, so now I KNOW we are dealing
with a 1994-1997 compatability? issue, Not a 1993 to 1994 issue ....TIA, joel

What Addy did you find to run your VIN?

I have a 93 5 speed 4x4 and the plug that is on mine is a speed sensor circuit (VSS). I do know that that trans should have ATF Dexron\Mercon III, NOT IV or V. Do not put 80\90 WT gear oil in, or else about 5,000 - 10,000 (Estimate) miles you will be buying another one.

Hey Reno,

Thanks for the advice on the fluid, I believe I have also heard you can run
10W30 Mobil 1 Synthetic in it as well?? (not on this board, just talking to
a transmission guy the other day IIRC.....)

Well, I already have a chance to give back with some help!!!

Here is the linky:

http://www.analogx.com/CONTENTS/vinview.htm

Just enter your VIN (for vehicles since 1978), and it will decode
some information for you....

If you search the posts under transmission you'll see I did this swap; newer tranny to older truck. You can swap the tail cones and speedo gear easily. Just save the circlip, indent BB and gear from the old unit.
