Just purchase a '93 five speed that the transmission went out on the PO. Would not go into 3,4,5 and reverse was tough.

Added slave cylinder fluid. Took it for ride all gears working "click" into fourth, third not perfect. Changed trans fluid. Took out 12oz Black, put in 2.4 quarts of Mercon V. Trans looked dry outside just neglected (156k). Took it for a 1/2 mile ride with mostly smooth up and down shifting, slight resistance in fourth. Back in 25 zone went 2,3,4th again. Now stuck in fourth.

Questions:
Do I really need a sledge hammer to get it out? Tried cheater bar on the shifter and rocking. Clutch seems ok, slave has used no fluid since filled.

If I do get it out, can I drive without using fourth? Seemed to work ok otherwise.

Did I give the new trans fuid enough time to get all the places it hasn't been in a long time?

Pull the shifter first before trying to get out of fourth? Did not feel a lot of slop but only drove maybe 1.5 miles.

For as dry as it was, there were no chunks of metal in the trans fluid.

Moderator: move this thread if it is in the wrong place.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Larry

Update: removed shifter and used a tire iron to go into neutral. It went easy-a screwdriver would have worked. Does this mean it could just be a shifter kit? Shifter fork? Bearing? or combo?

I appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,
Larry

try checking out the components that align the shifter and hold it in place, the pivot point of the shifter and the bushings that surround it.

if you only took out 12 oz. of black then some of those parts may be worn/destroyed/no longer there.

i had an issue with fifth gear because the shifter was floating around too much due to parts that were no longer there.

Thanks. I thought I was moving it out of gear but apparently not. Moving the detent(correct term?) does not allow me to shift. If I can get it into first and not use fourth, I should be ok until I line up another trans. I would like to get it to go to first without removing the carpet. Any way to do that?

Also, Is there a place to exchange my trans for a rebuilt with a guarantee?

My reccomendation would be to go to the scrap yard give them your tranny get a bit of cash go to the j yard and find a ranger or 2 door sploder ( if you want a manual tranny again) where the motor blew up or some other obvious problen not tranny related. Also do some research on trannies obviously some are better than others figure out what you want. As far as getting a warranty I don't see it happening for what you'll spend you might as well go get another vehicle. Consider tearinf into your current tranny I've only helped tear apart one and its not that bad ita like rebuilding a carb looks and seems complicated then you dive in and suddenly you're a carb pro. A few options 1 new 2 used 3 rebuild. Me personally I'd rebuild but I have 10s of thousands of dollars of tools at work and a company vehicle to take home if I need to. Before you decide consider 2 things 1 monetary worth of the vehicle and 2 sentimental worth. Sorry I don't have much better to do than sit here and write out a novel good luck.

I went over the video again for the shifter bushing rebuild. I realized that there were NO bushings in the shifter. It didn't look bad because they were not there.

I ordered a kit.

Could the resistance I felt going into 4th be the bushing? If so, could the bushing pieces also be causing the sticking in 4th gear by being crammed in there?

Does it sound like I am avoiding the inevitable? Thanks for the novel

Well if the inevitable is throwing some new bushings in then yes. If you mean a rebuild or one of the other options not certain. My reccomendation would be to get a flexible camera with a light on it and stick her down in there dewalt makea one pretty cheap for how much time it'll save you or you could borrow one. Know what your looking fot chipped gears etc. Also look in the bottom for any shavings or metal chunks. Some might disagree but I think some shavings are alright ( that things been spinning for 150 000 miles). Also and if you go the camera option look for blued metal from where it might have gotten hot. The way I had it explained to me is that if something got hot enough to blue it that part WILL fail don't know how long but it will. Anyways good luck . End of brownie mobile book 2

The absence of the bushings will cause this. I recently put a 5-speed in my ranger that didn't come with any shifter bushings. Playing around with it before it was in the truck and it was hard to shift. Once the bushings were it, shifting was easy. Since you were able to easily pop it into neutral with the shifter out, I'd bet to say you would be fine.

Changed the shifter bushings.. Still just fourth and neutral. Is the next step to remove carpet to get go linkage or remove trans? Even with no bushings, I was able to go through the gears. There were shavings on the magnetic plug but no big pieces. I like the camera idea but I dont have one..

Thanks,
Larry
