Hello.

I just purchased a Red 1996 Ford Ranger Splash 4x4 4.0L, 280,000miles, stepside with a matching Leer Cap. I am pretty excited about it. We will use it as a snow car in the Northeast and utility car in the summer. It is the first Ford ant truck I have ever owned. Unless you consider my 1957 Ranchero which I owned when I was 15. Not bad looking with the stepside bed and Leer top. I would post a picture if I could figure out how to do it.

In any event I do have a few questions. I think I have done a pretty good job researching the site to avoid repetition and hope you will allow me to ask my questions here. The OD, 4x4,and 4x4low lights appear after start and as long as the parking and headlights are off, but as soon as the headlights are turned on they disappear. Is this normal?

It appears to have the stock premium radio cassette with the remote CD changer. The radio clock and tuner work but none of the buttons are backlit and adjusting the dimmer control does not seem to matter. Is this normal?

I am a reasonably big guy, 6' 220lbs and find that the 60/40 then see a little uncomfortable what are the best replacement options available?

The transmission is a little clunky when starting out or shifting into reverse smooth enough shifting on the highway. Anything in particular I should look for?

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation. I look forward to being a participant on the site.

Welcome to TRS~!

Although I can't answer any of the above questions (OK, the seat change to buckets is something I have experience with) but I'm sure you will get them...usually better to post in the appropriate forums though, because not all the gurus look here...

Oh, check the tranny fluid level...if it's low, it could explain the clunkyness...

And the backlit buttons on your sound system usually do light up...I have one out of a later model truck and the lights all work...and I've seen other trucks with a variety of sound systems...all the buttons usually do light up...but if they don't...it may be a pita to change a bulb because you would usually need to crack open the case...and most of them are hard wired into the boards...

But, alas, I know not everything and there may be a quick fix...

first off, welcome...

as for your questions.....the OD, 4x4, 4lo lights staying on after start til park/headlights are on is new to me....have had a couple Rangers and have never had this problem....

the stock head units are notorious over time to have the back lit bulbs go out, as was mentioned before you would have to crack open the case ( pita ) to fix...ask/look in the for sale forums, most seem to get rid of the stock units for aftermarket ones, you may be able to get a good one for really cheap

the mid 90's Rangers and Explorers share most of the same architecture....i swapped in leather full power Expo seats into mine ( i am 6' 1" 260lbs, and i fit really comfortably ) they bolt right in. other than the seatbelt track has to be swapped out ( 1 nut to loosen is all ) because the Rangers floorboard is flat behind the seat, where the Explorers has a hump....

as for the "clunkyness" you may have a U-Joint that is starting to fail, allowing some play in the driveline... crawl under the truck and grab the driveshaft and try to turn it back and forth....there should be very little "play" in it

hope this helps ya out....
