New tools you've bought recently?

Don't quote me, but I believe 2011. AFAIK the only modern Hyundai/KIA engine that uses the shim type valve adjustment is the Beta 1.8 and 2.0 4 cylinder engine. I was surprised to see that when I took off my valve cover.

Mine is a 2010 with the 2.4L Theta II, the year model before the massive engine recalls. 200k miles so far with no major issues.

Be careful with your oil changes. Mine had a lot of baked on sludge for 74,000 miles. I had to pull the oil pan off because I didn't trust what was in there. Many cans of spray carburetor cleaner were used to desludge it.

That's actually folded in half... 4 foot long unfolded.

I have several kneeling pads... i keep them all over the place. Shed, deck box, in each of my trucks, garage and I had one I took to my daughter's new house when I was doing electrical outlets. She said she was keeping it. My knees just can't handle being on hard surfaces.

Every 5k since it rolled off the lot. Most of that synthetic. I had the top end open at around 190k for valve cover gasket, top end was clean. Unfortunately, I didn't pay that much attention to valve adjustment stuff because it didn't show signs of needing it.

I about forgot, I did buy a new torque wrench recently. Have a 3/8" drive craftsman that served for the majority of my needs, but only goes up to around 70 ft-lb IIRC. If I needed bigger I'd borrow dad's that goes up to 120 or 150, but it's old and used enough that I really questioned it's accuracy every time I used it.

Have ocassionally needed something that would go up to around 200 ft-lb, wanted a 1/2" drive, also wanted something that would measure degrees for angle torque. Found myself needing something bigger than my 70 ft-lber and 1/2" drive (could have used an adapter though) again the other week. Insteading of borrowing the questionable one again, I made the purchase. Picked up one of the Quinn 1/2" Digital torque wrenches from Harbor Freight. Everything I've read suggests they are comparible to the Craftsman version (possibly same foreign assembly line) and might even be a little tighter on the tolerance. Reviews also seem to be positive.

Wasn't thinking about it prior to using, but really liking the digital readout. Much easier to see your what you're setting it for than those little etched lines, especially when it they get a little dirty/greasy or in low light.

I picked up one of these to support the engine on the Escape when I get to replacing the transmission. I'm also waiting on a support hangar so I can use the tool since the engine doesn't come with one. Ford wants you to use a $1,000 support bar under the engine instead but if one were to swap the engine out, one would need the hanger tool anyway. Stupid...

Lowe's, Home Depot, 84 lumber, etc. They sell exactly the right tool.

Went yard saling yesterday and picked up this air compressor for $200. I have been wanting a gas one for a while and this should do the trick. Some lady was selling it, said her husband used to do roofing and used it in June. Ancient fuel and no start suggested otherwise but it was an easy fix, carb was just plugged up with old gas and a lot of dirt. Runs great, changed the oil in both the engine and compressor, that has probably never been done and two new pressure gauges. Might see if I can find a way to mount it on my welding trailer.

Maybe I poked too much fun on this one before. When I was at the Carlisle Truck Nationals, I saw a half a dozen guys sporting a Murse (Seinfeld reference). Everything from the little tool pouch, to one that looked like a case for binoculars but had GMC logos on it, to a Louis Vuitton tote bag. But that’s not what actually spurred this little post.

I’m just waking up today, and I’m watching Fox and Friends (7 AM East Coast segment), and they did a whole section on the Man purse, all the different styles, pictures of all the famous male athletes and famous men who carry them.

I realize that it was me, I’m the one behind the times. I am humbled, and apologetic. I’m thinking of calling one of my friends from the theater to help me go shopping for one that’s appropriate for my lifestyle.
