We finally bit the bullet and replaced that money pit chevy silverado. it was a nice truck overall we just wanted something newer.

so we got this...

2003 F150 5.4
Crew Cab
Auto
2wd :bawling:
3.55 open :bawling:
but its a major step up, and my father is happy with it.
maily a DD, but will pull the atv's, boat, and camper when needed.

i'm extremly happy with the deal we got. plans are simple...

air intake later on, exhaust, and tuner
also.. LineX the bed, install ham radio, paint some of the faded plastics.

Hope the plugs have been changed....

Nice find!!:icon_thumby: Minus being a 2wd, it looks like a real nice truck.

Hope so. Don't know... Ordered coil packs and plugs for it today tho. Rockauto FTW lol.

For dad, a 2wd is less parts to maintain. For 4wd we have atvs tractors and my b2.

I was referring to the fact that that's the gen where the plugs like to snap off in the heads... isn't it a 3V motor?

It would have a 2v, the older ones are picky about being torqued too loose or to tight and stripping out the few threads Ford gave them. '03's got an improved head with more threads so that isn't even an issue.

If you change the plugs change the boots too. No real need to change the coilpacks unless you have to though.

Nice looking truck at any rate though :icon_thumby:

So you're saying I dont have that big of an issue with the threads breaking?
That's good to know. Regardless I'm gonna torque them to spec and start all fresh.

Regardless they are factory coil packs and never been changed. Got the all on rockauto for $228 shipped. Dad said he'd rather just change them all now since he's dealt with several and it always seems like when one goes they all do. Cyclinder 7 has a misfire bc of the plug or something. We're also gonna do a fuel filter and air filter. Also an oil change. The truck always had valvoline in it. Service before sale was done with penzoil crap. We don't touch that crap.. It'll get a good dose of Rotella-T. Only oil we use.

In the future we'll be adding a chrome diamond plate toolbox and a posi for the rear.

They will not at all break like the 04+ 3v trucks. The 97-02 (and now that I think about possibly midyear 03) 5.4's could strip out the threads (too loose and they would work them until they gave, too tight would just strip them) Somewhere around '03 they added more threads to the heads.

The big deal is people try to run the plugs forever, the gap opens and overworks the coils. Then they all go out at once because they were all stressed evenly.

I have had my '02 for 5.5 years, the only mechanical problem I have had is a shorted coilpack two years ago after it spent a night with a 40mph crosswind in a blizzard that filled a plug well with snow... and that is it because "It really couldn't be as bad out as the guy on the radio says, I think I will go check it out..." If it would have been sitting in the driveway that night it would have been faultless to date. So far the other seven are still working perfectly.
