I own a 1991 Ford Ranger XLT with the 4.0. My truck seems sluggish, and I have never felt the torque that I hear so much about with the 4.0. My gas pedal is funky to say the least. I have to press it about half way down before I get any sort of real movement, and I'm pedal to the metal to get onto a 35mph road. Is this a common problem of the model Ranger that I own?
For anybody that owns a similar year, is your gas pedal tight?

How might I fix this problem? Replace the throttle cable? Or is it a pedal issue? Hopefully somebody has already experienced my same problem.

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I'm new to this forum, and I already love what I see!:yahoo:

Welcome, I would suspect the cable is your problem. I would look where it connects to the throttle body. Also check the movement of the butterfly in the throttle body.
Just my .02

That's what I suspected...
I really didn't want it to be the cable, I was hoping for an easy fix..

So how do these 4.0's of my year drive? I've read they're pretty quick, I've never experienced it in my two years of owning my Ranger..
But, I look forward to moving past my current problem, and getting it fixed.

The cables tend to stretch over time. If you look up under the dash and see where the cable runs through the pedal, you'll see that when you hold the pedal up, there may be quite a lot of slack. What you want to do is use something (zipties, compression fitting etc) to tie around the end of the throttle cable so that it open the throttle all the way.

Check out the write up in the tech section HERE

I'm out to do that right now!
Thanks!

FIXED!

Runs good now, or at least better.
