So a guy came to my house to purchase a tv I had listed on Craigslist. He showed up in a Bronco II. I had no clue what they were, but it was love at first sight. I offered cash on the spot the next day I was signing the title. Even though it was 2wd, I still love it. Did some more research and decided to get a 4wd B2. I searched seemed like forever before I found my project. Im active duty military station over in San Diego and found my project in Phoenix, AZ. Yes I drove all the way from SD to Phoenix to get my new found love. Of course I was kind of worried it wouldn't make it back to SD. Tride and true ole Chucky made the drive as he should have. With any '89 model vehicle it has issues. Of course what one wouldn't unless it has a complete frame up resto? Any who. What are my does and donts with these 4wd models? Not gonna dump alot of money into it. Mainly once I get back to Louisiana it will be my hunting vehicle. Not a trashed out hunting vehicle though. I do know that the 4x4 works when it wants to, but now it does nothing. So please welcome me and give me some pointers.

Find a 1st gen Explorer and put the 4.0 in it. Switch to a manual tcase, the electric ones are not dependable. The ex will also supply a D35, a nice lil upgrade over your D28.
Good luck with your build. Lots of useful info on here

Congrats on the new BII.

If your BII has elec shift 4x then check the switch first. There's a 4x control module in the left quarter panel that can go out and also the electric shift motor at the transfer case. I think there's a write up in the tech section on how to pin point the problem. Or it could be as simple as your front automatic hubs going out.

Well the 4wd works when it wants to. I checked the autotragic system and all parts work, the shift motor is fine, but I will be focused on the module now. Where exactly is it located and do yall have pics of it? Thank yall much.

The module is behind the driver's seat, hidden behind a little panel on the wall. But the module is the most dependable part of the system. I'm betting the button contacts are messed up if you have intermittent operation.

When I hit the button I hear a buch of "clicking", then eventually the shift motor engages the 4wd. Ill take a look behind the dash and track those wires in the AM.

I'm not really sure on the electronic 4WD systems all I know is I try to avoid them. However check all the wiring connections to the buttons as well as the connections on the selector motor on the t-case, and the connections to the control module. Take all the connections apart clean them, and apply some dielectric grease to every connection before putting things back together. If its an intermittent problem its most likely a faulty connection somewhere rather than a failing component.

Thanks yall. Just dont have time to work on the 4wd B2 now. Gotta do some work the rear end on my 2wd B2 D/D. I know now to invest on some Dana style drive shafts for my 4wd B2. Much money as these things are costing me, I sure do love them.

Congrats on your new purchases. Where in Louisiana you from? I'm just south of New Orleans working on a 89 4x4 for my camp truck
