Hi Guys,

I just picked up a '92 Ranger V-6 3.0 "Vulcan" with a 5 speed manual.

I just need a little pickup for some projects around the house. I really wanted a 4 cyl 5 speed base model but they are just rare around here.

I ended up with a supercab v-6. I really like the power of the V-6 though and the gas mileage hasn't been bad, so I'm happy!

It's an old truck so it's got a few minor problems that I'll be researching here on the forum (or posting about if I can't find an answer)

*) The tailgate won't come down.
Not too worried about this, I've never owned an old truck that I didn't have to service the tailgate.

*) The temperature gauge doesn't move.
Not sure, here. It runs fine and the heater does heat up.

*) It's got an occasional squeal/high pitched rattle.
I'm thinking idler pulley or a/c clutch?

*) The radio display doesn't work.
If it's like our old aerostar was, it's just a light bulb?

*) The a/c doesn't work.
No biggie, I have gauges, a vac pump and some R-12 cans I bought years ago. I'm guessing now seals and hoses and we'll see if it holds a vacuum. Worse comes to worse I can probably pop for a new compressor or whatever else it may need.

I just ordered a Haynes manual plus original Ford chassis and engine manuals for it so I'll dig in deeper when they get here. For now it's hauled some lawn clipping, plywood and 2x4s just fine!

Take care, looking forward to participating here!

Welcome to TRS~

The squeal might also be your alternator belt...mine did that for about six months before I finally tightened it properly...

If it takes a loooooong time to heat up you may need a new t-stat...I just changed mine and it made a huge difference...and the temp gauge started working properly...or it may be a loose wire...

Other than that...sounds like you've got a handle on things...and there is plenty of free advice if you need to get it...or give it...:icon_thumby:

Hi Mark,

I got the tailgate down! I shot some WD-40 in it and pulled up and it felt springy, not solid so I pulled really hard. I heard a POP so loud I was sure I broke something and then it opened! I hosed everything down with WD-40 and it's working just fine now! I'm amazed as things like that are never my luck!

There's a receipt for a new alternator in May in the glove box, and the alternator does look new . . . I'll have to check the belt tension!

The truck is warming up. I drove it 45 miles home and the heater was definitely working, but the meter never budged.

I'm waiting for my service manuals to show up and then I'll tear into these things . . . or cry Uncle and ask for help here if I get lost! 8->

Nice to meet ya, I'm looking forward to participating and fixing up my old truck!

Take care,

Steve
