Hi everyone,
I just picked up a 1990 ford from my inlaws for free. it is a 2.9 liter super cab with a 5 speed They said that the brakes and the clutch are leaking and need to be filled occasionally. Sorry I dont know how often exactly. I would guess every 2 or 3 weeks. They do drive it once in awhile and they said they just make sure its full. They say it drives just fine when everything is full. It isnt leaving any puddles and he says he cant find the leaks. Any ideas woudl be helpful . What type of transmission is in it. Or well any ideas would be great.

Should be a Mazda M5OD transmission. It uses ATF for transmission fluid. Slave cylinder or clutch master cylinder could be leaking. Brakes...no idea. Most any leak will show up somewhere. If it leaks out that much, there has to be evidence of it somewhere.

Check on the inside of the rear drums. Could be the rear wheel cylinders leaking.

Thanks for the reply I will pull those tonight when I get it home. Is it hard to replace the Slave cylinder on these?

Slave cylinder is what disengages the clutch and is inside the transmission. You will have to pull the transmission to change the slave.

How hard is this to do. Is there a manual that anyone would recommend on this I.E. Haynes, Chiltons. Or any tips for trying this.

Ok I just looked I have the FM 132 transmission. also He said that sometimes it will go weeks before the cluthc resovior is empty sometimes its a week any ideas would be great

Also I pulled out that 2x3 rubber plug and there is no fluid in there. there is some gunk but nothing that seemd like a puddle

Look inside the cab under the clutch master cyl. It could be leaking inside and going under the carpet.

Ill Check there too thanks, The carpet is wet so it will be hard to tell maybe ill wrap a towel around to see if it takes anything in.

I concure with jspafford that it is prob wheel cylinders you usually have to change the shoues also because fluid gets on them. With the age of the truck you should inspect all brakelines for rust

Reply well my father inlaw did not even look at this thing before we took it. Found the leak in the brake line. It is rusted out by the gas tank. Im just gonna get a roll of 3/16 line and do the whole thing.
