My credo
If you save everything 'til the last minute, it only takes a minute to do.
A while back I bought a rebuilt steering box from a buddy for next to nothing. He said it was for a ford truck but wasn't sure which type. I've always heard they are the same and it looked identical to my 92 ranger box.

I pulled it apart to drill/tap for hydro assist and now putting it back together I noticed the fittings on the box for the inlet/oulet lines are different than that of my ranger. The size and thread looks the same but they are not the inverted flare on my current box. Looking at my box it looks almost like there are brass inserts in there. I'm wondering if maybe this new box just doesn't have them but I can't seem to find them online anywhere.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Mike

They are brass inserts. You might be able to swap them over from your old one, though an initial brief attempt to pull one out of an old junk box I have here with a screwdriver wasn't successful (I can wiggle them ever so slightly though, so it seems they should come out).

Edit:
Looking in my Ford service manual it shows them as a "inlet tube seat" (and shows it's pt# as "374309-S") and an "outlet tube seat" (pt# 384480-S).

Using a stiff piece of steel wire with the end bent into a hook (about like the tool I see in your pic) I was able to yank one out (they're pressed in). The hole looks just like in your lower pic.

Hope that helps

Thank you sooo much! Looks like there are a few places that sell them. Mine did not feel like coming out at all so I'll just leave them in and save the old box for a spare.
