I just bought a 1994 Ranger XLT 4x4 5 speed manual Supercab from a neighbor. Need a few little things and one big thing to get it back to fully functional. Body’s in pretty good shape. Interior is solid (except for the armrest console) but dirty. The big thing is it doesn’t have 5th gear. The shifter moves to the spot but the engine is essentially in neutral. I retire from work in 6 weeks so I now have a new source of projects!

Welcome to the site.

Huh. Does it have reverse? Same shifter fork I think.

"Random Thought" for today. Maybe someone stole 5th gear ! You never know. Welcome to the club.

Thanks for the welcome. The trans shifts well into reverse, and any other gear than 5th. I changed the shifter bushings (the old ones were completely gone) and that tightened up the shifting but still no 5th. The shifter seems to go to where 5th is but it feels like the trans is in neutral. I think I can do a partial disassembly of the tranny to get to the fifth gears and synchros and hopefully I will see the problem and rectify it without a complete disassembly. Maybe I’m just an optimist! It will be a fun project, with lots of frustrations along the way.

No way! I'm from Lanexa too. New Kent side. red single cab long bed if you've ever seen me around!

Drive it. One less gear to worry about. Had a friend who lost 5th gear. Cost more to fix than the vehicle was worth. 'Lived Happily Ever After' on 4 gears

lucky you, I had the same thing happen in my 93 but with 2nd gear. Id of happily driven mine with no 5th but no 2nd was really a pain. Was1100 for a reman transmission, 400 in clutch parts and miscellaneous stuff. Enjoy your “4-speed”. unless you drive a lot of highway miles it doesnt really make much fuel mpg difference, I think it only drops rpm by 400 between 4rth & 5th. Years ago I did a test of 4rth vs 5th as top gear on my daily 12 mile commute, only dropped my mpg by 1.

It really bugs me that 5th doesn’t work, even though it would really only make a marginal change in how I’ll use the truck. I think I’m going in. Changing 5th gear and or it’s synchro rings looks like it will only take a partial disassembly of the tranny. I’ve never done it before but what the heck. I’m in for an adventure. What could go wrong?

Welcome from another newbie!
