New Ranger?

I have to get an auto, a stick is too damn annoying in L.A. traffic.

I wouldnt get a ranger then haha

is the auto that bad??

ryan stfu and get out of here all U do is complain, now go stick a tampon in it and gtfo it, god u little freakin cry baby. Atleast ppl understand what im sayin cause this isnt english class.

Well my 97 has almost 150k on it, and no issues whatsoever with the auto...

The manual transmission is a bit more robust, but if you don't beat the crap out of it and you change the fluids and maintain it, an auto can last a long time.

I only spotted 3 mild spelling mistakes, and some slight run-on sentences. That is fine for normal typing, also considering that there is no revision/spell check feature in the Quick Reply box. Please, leave him alone- unless you have a Ph.D. in English or teaching credentials, don't put him down. You could have PM'd him and saved him from becoming abashed. /OffTopic

What kind of Ranger can you get for $1-2k?

is the auto that bad??

Depends on who you ask. Historically they are notoriously unreliable, breaking down around 70k miles. Basically if you're looking at a truck with more than that, which you probably will, and the transmission hasn't been replaced or rebuilt, examine the maintenance history closely and pay verrrry close attention when test driving it. put it through its paces.

I used to have one and honestly I sold it after a month because of the possibility of the trans breaking down at any moment was eating me up haha. Every time I drove it I was always wondering if it was going to quit on me. Of course I'm a real perfectionist when it comes to my cars. I've just heard a lot of negative things about them, and not enough pros to outweigh the cons.

For 1-2k you could probably find a late 80's to mid 90's 4 cyl 2wd std cab truck in decent condition. The only 4x4's you may find will most likely be high mileage and beat up.

**** PS: It's amazing what proofreading does to the quality of your post... :icon_twisted:

Should I take the risk? And is a rebuilt transmission just a crap tranny elbow greased to run a little more?

as mac said the early ones do have problems and my uncle is lucky if he gets 12 out of his on the hwy, he also has had quite a few problems with the 4x4 not working when he needed it most, lets just say in the las 5 years he has had to replace the hubs 3 times. now like we have mentioned if ur gonna lift is just go 97 or earlier it will be alot cheaper since u dont have tortion bars and all that crap which will leave u broke after just the lift and might cost more than u pay for your truck. you know this is the first time i have actually been able to truely help someone on here without screwing info up haha

There is something out of the norm if your uncles truck only gets 12mpg.

98+ are much cheaper to lift a little. 2" is the cost of an alignment.

As far as rebuilt trannys go, do your research and accept that as a rule you get what you pay for.

If I get a 90's model, how much would a ballpark estimate for replacing the engine and tranny (and related parts) with brand-new parts be? I want to make it showroom new, drivetrain wise.

85, yes there is something out of the norm with my uncle's truck haha. Now matt a rebuilt auto can last anywhere from 16k (as seen in a recent post) to 200k, all depends on what it has been through, now of coarse as all vehicle manufactures have are the bad apples of the bunch sometimes you may get one that new only lasts 70k or as some on here have lasted 300k. i would have no problem buying an auto as thats what my uncle and a couple of my friends have and they have had nothing but good with them except one which died at 196k. I for one though have to go with a man or else for some odd reason i fall asleep at the wheel.

drive-train wise, i was lookin at 7k for my 92 expo but that was with finding the motor new and not used by a private seller who ended up not needing it and he was wanting 2k for it which i could get one online for 4200 brand new not rebuilt.

Do dealers sell the 90's parts still?

yes and no, some parts they do and some they don't but you would be better off and cheaper going online as most places sell for half if not more off dealer price. When dealing with rangers ebay is your friend my man, well that and lmc.

What if you need parts fast? Where can you get any part you'd need same day or next day?
