Hey all. Finally got my first Ranger. It’s a 93 3.0 2wd extended cab. Needs some work but, I picked it up for a song. I’ll be interested to read through the forums for tons of good information and definitely be able to offer some of my own advice.
Im a transmission mechanic turned machinist. I’ve built literally hundreds of the M5R1 and M5R2 transmissions in my career and over 10,000 transmissions total. I also owned a small drivetrain repair shop for a number of years but, decided to go into industrial manufacturing as a CNC machinist.
Hit me up if I can answer any questions or if you wanna hang out.

Welcome to the site.

Thanks guys. I’m getting ready to rebuild my 5-speed in my 3.0 truck. Are the ratios from either a 4.0 or a 2.3 more desirable that the ratios from the 3.0? I’m planning on an Explorer rear end swap with either 3.73 or 4.11 ratio and 31” tires. Is there another thread on this? I haven’t seen anything specifically on this subject.

Welcome to TRS!

Oh, there's threads on this all over on here... but it's kinda spread out between the transmission and axle sections...

The non 4.0 ratios are more desirable (only two options, 4.0L had it's own ratios and everything else got the other), lower first through third gear and you're going to want it with a 3L...

I have 4.10's on my '97 4 cylinder and have had 4 tire sizes on it, biggest being 235 75 15, I dropped one size down to 225 75 15 so 5th was more useable...

On a 4x2 I don't think I'd bother going to an explorer 8.8 but I've been tempted since I have an extra in the yard... but I'd want to regear to 4.30's or something going to 31's, I've done it on my '90 and it was doable but I was in 4th a lot and for offroad it had low range...

Hey Charlie, welcome to TRS. You should start a new thread so all your replies will be easier to find. I think if you find a section to post it in don't worry so much starting out about where to post it, they're generally good to move one where it should be

Good luck, I have a 93 XLT SC 4.0. I love it.
