Guys,

Just acquired a '84 Bronco II from the original owner.

Details:

142K miles
always garaged
automatic transmission
Never wrecked
100% original: paint, interior, wheels, engine never overhauled
Seats and carpet need cleaning, but no rips or tears,
New tires, new headliner, new battery
Engine is running rough – needs tune up, valve cover gaskets
a/c needs coolant charge, but works.
Needs new sending unit in gas tank to make fuel gauge work.
Could use a paint job, but looks amazingly good for a 26 year old truck

I'm looking forward to sharing my ideas and questions with you all as I restore this truck.

Nice truck! Welcome to The Ranger Station dude! Pull up a lawn chair, shotgun and some ammunition, because we like to kick it, and have fun here =).

Where ya from?

We are getting a lot of younger users nowadays haha, well, me included, haha.

Like the way it looks original, clean and that it is from 1984! Rock on little 2.8L! rock on!

Thanks for the welcome RK. I'm from LA (Lower Alabama), and I'll be happy to pull up my lawn chair. I prefer my AR15 over the shotgun for longer reach. :yahoo:

And, I'm not the guy in the picture. That is my 15 year old son. The BII is our father/son project. When he turns 16 it will be his wheels.

nice, lucky him =D throw him on the forums to get used to the old lookout =)

I just came here for some info, and my buddy Cody told me about it, so when I got here, I decided to stay, have not found these forums NOT to be useful yet!

Whats the old clunker need done?

Truck needs:

tune-up to fix surging at low speeds
valve seals, valve cover gaskets
a/c refrigerant charge
new fuel sending unit

What I want to do to it:

Duraspark conversion
replace dinky tires with 31 x 10.5
2" lift
gear change
4.0l swap would be good
new stereo to replace original am/fm cassette

yeah, I am keeping my mechanics stock, minus a new tranny someday.

I like my carb done by computer and all that good stuff, more effective for me =)

Valve guide seals are not too bad and if all the emission stuff still is working you need the computer to keep the A/C working proper. If it has good compression http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/2_8L_Performance.html here is the link to the tech library and it explains how to change the valve guide seals. If you can get it running with the computer easy enough I would go that route just get a code reader or use the tech library on EEC-IV diagnostics to use a test light or volt ohm meter to retrieve the codes. Other wise the duraspark conversion is another option but dont know how you would control the A/C without the computer but I am sure it can be done. Oh yea if you need to pass emissions the duraspark is out. Woo Hooo they finally plugged the fracking leak I got my fingers crossed.

Welcome! I think the '84' BII was the first new car/truck I ever bought. My new room mate wanted something like that so I helped him shop. Ended up we both bought one. Got the XLS version and loved it so much that in '87' I bought a 4x2 Ranger just like it from seat forward. Good luck with your's and you have found a good site.

Thanks for the info on the a/c. Nowhere in the Duraspark conversion articles did I see anything about the a/c being affected.

I am not sure on the 84 but the computer usually controls the WOT wide open throttle solenoid that disenguages the a/c clutch with your foot into it and it will up the idle speed when it is enguaged I suppose you just set the idle a little higher to count for that. But yea if you need to pass emissions do the duraspark for dependability and valve guide seals help alot. I also pulled the intake manifold at the same time to fix the oil leaks and changed over to synthetic oil castrol 10w30 works great with a motorcraft filter. But if you have oil leaks dont switch it will leak faster. I also run the stock coil with the duraspark and autolite single platinum plugs without a hitch. With the duraspark you can eliminate almost all of the wires and vacuum lines around the engine and passenger side wheel apron I found a harness for the dizzy out of a 84 ranger 4 cyl and any blue grommet duraspark ignition module will work if you can find a donor vehicle you can get everything out of a late 70s pinto or mustang II with the 2.8l V-6. Keep us posted on what you decide to do but the duraspark will bring that engine back to life if the compression is good and the oil pressure is acceptable.
