Hey guys, my name is Chris and im new here. I have a 97 ranger 4x4 auto with 123,xxx miles. Its got the OHV 4.0L. A buddy of mine has another complete OHV 4.0L he will let me have for $100. So I was thinking about picking it up, having it rebuilt with forged internals, throw on some headers and supercharging it. I guess my question would be is it worth the money? I have heard all about putting a 5.0 in the ranger, but honestly if i wanted a 5.0 I would just buy a mustang. Im not looking to build a race truck or anything. My other option I was considering was to buy a thunderbird turbo coupe and make that a project instead. Or should I work with what I have?

its Not worth the money Unless you are doing it to Say You Did it. The 4.0 is designed to be a Low range torque engine. It does it extremely well.

The amount of money you would spend to get a 4.0 super charged(finding a supercharger for it is apparently rather hard) you could have installed a 5.0 from a mustang and get more horsepower.

I am no expert on the turbos and superchargers. But the 4.0 is plenty hp/torque for what its designed to do.

Example I Have personally pulled another ranger 4.0, 200 kilometers without any hp/torque troubles. and shortly thereafter I pulled a Taurus wagon 800 kilometers again without any hp/toque problems.

So taking that into account I would have no trouble pulling a 5.0 mustang backward with it trying to pull the truck the other way.

Its a matter of what you are looking to do with it. Its not a sports car. Its a truck => and a very strong small truck. stock.

tubro's would be a much cheaper option and would most likely get what you are looking for. more Omphf at the higher rpms since the 4.0 doesn't get more ommphfy, it starts low and just stays strong.
