Hello,

My name is Dan and I'm a Ford nut and well as a previous Ranger owner. I'm looking to get another Ranger (4.0 is a must) for a daily driver. My last Ranger was T-Boned by a 17yr old girl on her cell phone. :(

I have four questions:

1. Are the 4.0 (non-4wd) rangers rare? If so, how rare?

2. What years did 2WD rangers have 4.0's?

3. Is production number information available?

4. Do all 4.0 V6 engines have noisy roller lifters?

My Ranger was a 1990 (or 91) 2wd std cab, long bed, 4.0 v6 auto!

I loved this truck! I found the truck at a used car dealer and couldn't believe how quick it was (for a little pickup). I drove the pants off the truck for 7 years with literally no problems, other than the key lock clyinder going out.

I've never seen another 2WD 4.0L V6 Ranger other than the one I owned, they are all 3.0's or 4 bangers. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

What I'd really like to find is a early 90's short cab, short bed, 4.0 / Auto. Did they make them like this, or only with a long bed like the one I had?

Thanks for being patient with my "new guy" questions.

Not sure how many were made, but they are definitely out there. My dad's friend has a '92 single cab stepside(6' bed obviously) with the 4.0 in it. It's a pretty cool lookin truck.

Thanks, thats good to know. I'm going to look for the perfect one. It seems every time I see one for sale it's either a 4wd or a smaller engine.

Here's a picture of my unsuspecting 4.0 2WD Ranger!

I have a 1990 2wd XLT single cab with 4.0 v6 and auto tranny. Paid $1000 for it back in August. It was the first ranger I came across when I was looking to purchase a second truck. I think the former owner towed a camper with it (still has the electronic brake controller installed below the dash). I replaced the master cylinder, a leaking transmission pan gasket, power stearing supply hose, spark plugs, wires and the oxygen sensor. She now runs as good as new; cranks the first and every time I try and runs great. Keep looking; they are out there.

man that is one clean truck!! must not live in the rust belt....that truck would go for 4000 around here...

Short bed standard cab ranger's with a 4.0 are pretty rare, in fact ford stopped offering this combo in like 94 iirc. Most will either be an extended cab or long bed. Some fleet models are out there though.

4.0 4x2's are not real common. You stand a better chance of finding one in a Supercab.

My brother had a friend in high school that had a shortbed 4.0 5-speed and was even black, that thing would book. Too bad he ended up rolling it.

i dont know about that
theres a gen1 around town near my school that looks like a scaled d0wn (40's)f100 bed on it
im tempted to pay a cop to pull him over just so i can check it out

ps.good luck finding a new truck

Thanks guys for your input.

I'd settle for a clean long bed, (like the one I had) but I'd pay more for a clean short/short with a 4.0.

BTW, my Ranger ran 15.80's @89mph at the drag strip, bone stock!

BTW, 4.0's don't have "noisy lifters" the way 2.9's do.

Do 4.0's make a tapping noise? Yes.

But the tapping noise a 4.0 makes is usually the result of a different
problem, one that does NOT require removing the heads and replacing
the cam and lifters.

The usual cause of tapping noises from a 4.0 is galled pushrod sockets
in the rocker arms and galled pushrod tips.
