I'm new here on the forum but I've been reading some great and informative posts for awhile. I'm getting ready to do an engine swap in my 2001 ranger edge, 3.0 manual. I've purchased a 2004 4.6 engine & trans from a CV police cruiser. I'll be pulling the engine on Monday 9/5. I've made a list of other parts I'm going to pull at the same time and would appreciate any additional parts input that I might need. My list includes drive shaft, exhaust, radiator w/ fan, fuel pump, steering linkage, computer, ignition switch system w/ keys and trans floor shifter. Anything else???? I bought a series of DVD's from TRUCKS that really gAve some good info. Still a little unsure about the electronics though, any insight into this would be helpful. I've done engine swaps many years ago without hesitation but the new electronics worry me some. I'll start posting photos next week as the project unfolds.

First and foremost welcome to our little slice of Ranger heaven on the web.

Check out the V8 conversion forum. The 4.6 is a good motor but there is ALOT of work to be done for that motor. Main things are the motor, trans, ECU and wiring harness.

Grab a drink, pull up a seat and watch out for low flying bull shyt.

Yeah mosst people say its not worth it and what not but you actually sound like you kind of know whatyour doing so I will refrain...

I think the biggest problem is going to be the physical size of the motor in comparison to your 3.0, there might be some custom fabbing in the engine bay that needs to happen to fit the motor.

I have a little better insight into the swap now that I'm into it a good bit, (you can see my progress in the V8 conversion forum). I'm found that the engine fits in with room to spare (it looks big on the floor but in the truck it shrinks), I'm 99% sure that even the stock headers are going to fit. This is a SOHC engine and that makes a big difference. There is a guy on the web who did a DOHC and put both motors on the scales 4.6 &3.0, only about 20# heavier. Finished the motor mounts and will be placing the engine soon.
Thank
