Just received my Ford Racing LSD from Summit, and I was wondering:
1. What kind of oil to use
2. What to keep in mind when installing LSD.

It's a 7.5" 28 spline, going into a standard 1988 rearaxel...

LSD is illegal
 
Not sure what gear oil came stock in your truck but whatever that is with some limited-slip friction modifier.

you can use 75w-90 or 80w-90 but even with a synthetic i think you still need to add a friction modifier.

Yeah you will still need the little bottle of friction modifier like daniel said^. You need that for all the Limited slips i believe.

Already formulated? WRONG! If you don't add the friction modifier you are going to hear noises from the rear end.

My synthetic oil said it was already formulated for clutch type limited slips.

I don't know about all that now. Do you hear any clicking noises while driving? Usually that'll happen if you don't add the modifier. It's quite possible that I may be wrong though.

It is sitting on the floor beside my truck, so no noises of any kind yet...:D

I just remembered I did buy a tube of the friction stuff to soak the new clutches in, and I dumped what I could in the diff before I put the oil in so I do have modifier in the oil too. FYI it eats ziplock bags...

all the synthetic stuff i have seen says you still need to add friction modifier. what oil did you use that already had it?

Smartass. LOL. I've never heard of gear oil already formulated for limited slips that's why i'm saying it's incorrect. I'm just speaking from experience. I could be wrong though.
 
Got a magnetic dial indicator and a bunch of shims? How about a torque wrench? Bearing puller and a press? All these items are needed to install a new carrier. Small stuff I didn't feel need mentioned(brush, contact patch paint).



75 or 85W90 is just fine. Friction Modifier is required for the clutch style limited slip you'll be installing. Even if you use synthetic, squirt a bottle in there. And remember....friction modifier gets squirted in BEFORE the gear oil.
