Hey all, about to buy my uncles 92 Ranger for $1,500. It's in near mint condition and has 106k on it. It has the 3.0 and A4LD in it. I have a few questions. Is the A4LD as bad as people say it is? My uncle has changed the trans fluid many times and he has never abused it. It does however shift "firmly", not hard. Is that normal? It's only from 1st to 2nd. He said he's had it looked at since it did it from day one and no one said it was an issue even the dealership. He's the original owner by the way.

Also, is there anything in particular I should know about this truck? :icon_thumby:

sounds like a good deal... have any pics of the truck??? as for the trans if its not slipping and the fluid is good, run with it.....I am on my 2nd ranger and as far as small or midsize trucks go, I think they are a good tough truck...

No pics, I should've taken some when I saw it. It has a teeny tiny bit of rust on the quarter panels. It's gray. Everything on it works like it should. He's a retired dealer tech and body/collision tech. He's redone the front end, recharged the a/c and replaced the compressor, flushed the trans and differential many times, regular oil changes every 2,500 miles with Motorcraft filters. I'm sure there is much more he's done but basically it's a 21 year old truck that looks and runs like a truck with half the age and mileage.

some have problems with it some don't. The killer in any auto is heat and low fluid. To be on the safe side. Id recommend getting a larger tranny cooler I was looking at I believe b and m for 70ish bucks.

There are guys here (bloodbane?) Who have run the a4ld with 35s and a cooler goin on 200k + miles wheel there rigs all the time and have had no problems. Also seen guys run 35s on a explorer with 3.73 gearing and it lasted.

Pretty much if you take care of it it will take care of you. 3.0 is a solid engine. Not a power house. But its dependable.

Welcome to TRS. Grats on your first Ranger. However..... :worthless:

I'll pick the truck up Sunday morning so should have pics up then. I'll start another thread about the transmission in the transmission section but I have questions about coolers and how they should be installed.

My grandfather got a hold of a 93 Ford Ranger from my uncle, transmission was out in it when we hauled it home. Spend almost $3k having the transmission rebuilt by AAMCO. Transmission lasted about a year and the heaviest it ever worked was towing an 1100lb trailer a couple times within that year, other than that it was just mainly an occasional use truck around town mostly. That A4LD transmission could be ok, or it could die tomorrow you never know with them, I for one don't trust them at all, at least when the transmission failed the last time it happened in the driveway at home, wasn't about to pour another $3k into the pile of crap transmission so the truck was basically given away for $700 with a great running 4.0L V6. Now that I have my bronco 2 wish we would have kept the ranger and worked on swapping the engine into my B2.

Clean older rangers are getting a little harder to find, so $1500 isnt out of line, as far as trans goes most make it to 130K mark before they give up, ammco is the worst place to go for work and they dont back there stuff up, and there double than most places, here in Washington there are a couple of independent shops that do them for about $1200, provided there are not junk but a solid core

Well in roughly 12 hours I'll have my truck. I'll post pics of it when I can. Can't wait to get this truck, it'll be my 5th vehicle this year. All others fail on me since I'm attracted to sub $700 vehicles.

Seeing that it has been the family , do you know what has been done to the truck to keep it going for 21 yrs? This is a survivor, but due to its age, care has to taken. You can just as easily go through a 1500 buck truck, twice as fast as a 700 dollar one. The truck's advantage is that is a pretty easy to work on your self. In fact, the more upkeep you do yourself, the longer it will last. Keep it between the lines. :icon_thumby:

Here you go guys. Drives great.

Nice looking truck, and not too shabby of a price for the quality. as said by Road Angels, the 1st and 2nd gens are getting harder to find in any kind of decent condition. Nice score!
