New guy, new project: 1988 BII wheeler

I like it, keep up the sweet fab :headbang:

I didn't see your location, but if you run in any slick, mud type stuff you might not like those Iroks. I HATED mine. Went to the TSL SX and Love em :icon_hornsup:

Im in San Jose, CA. The truck will see a little of everything, including slick muddy stuff. I think the IROKS will work reasonably well for the various terrain this thing will see. And if not i may groove them or find some others :icon_thumby:

Frame is notched, though not done. I ended up cutting ALOT of the frame out (about 4" :icon_surprised:) so im working on beefing it back up :D

Pictures when its all done, i think you guys will be proud of the beefiness when you see it though haha

im definitely slacking haha :icon_twisted:

frame should be all finished tomorrow hopefully. Then comes mounting my steering ram and getting the front axle under the truck! :headbang:

alright man your kill us with the lack of an update. hopefully your getin so good work done that is why:dunno:but cant wait to see the progress :icon_thumby:

FINALLY here with an update haha :icon_thumby: At least i come with lots-o-pictures! The frame is plated and ready to go, here are the pics of the whole process:

Original plan for the cut (ended up cutting out about 1” more than this):

After grinding the notched ended up about 3.75”:

And here’s the piece that’s going in to beef it back up, .25” plate on the bottom and .375” plate for the side:

Need to work on my upside down welding:

Could have ended it there but since I took out so much frame I figured I better overbuild it :headbang:. This section of frame will have the front body mount to support as well as the bumper and winch so it needs to be strong. Here’s what I did.

I had some pieces of 3/8” plate laying around so I cut and fitted them on the frame:

Welded up:

The holes were already in the plate because they were ubolt plates I screwed up so i got to make some good plug welds :icon_welder:

All welded in:

That’s it, frame is all ready for the front axle :icon_bounceblue:. Tomorrow I’m working on mounting up the steering cylinder to the axle and hopefully rolling it under the truck, though probably wont end up happening haha.

looks beef as hell:headbang:. i forgot why you where notching the frame are you going to be makeing a new crossmember in there or somthing to build up the frame? looks like it will be able to withstand holding up the front end:icon_thumby:

the notch is actually to free up some space for the axle truss. If i hadnt notched the frame, i wouldve needed to make the truck really tall to fit the axle under and have any uptravel. i will be putting in a big front bumper and leaving the original crossmember in so it whould be pretty well supported. Plus the frame is now 1/2" thick on the outside and boxed in with 3/8" plate on the inside :icon_thumby:

wow

keep up the good work. i just spent the last hour reading this whole post. i have the exact same BII. just wish i had the time, tools, skills to do all that like you are. real low on funds, mine is stored and not used for now buthopefully that will change at some point this year.

good luck with your build, look forward to see it in action.

I'll be sure to take a few videos when it gets going :icon_thumby:

steering ram mount will hopefully get finished tonight, gotta go buy some more welding wire though. Then the front axle is ready to roll :icon_thumby:

:icon_cheers:Happy St. Patty's Day everyone:icon_cheers:

swweeeet. lets see them pics we'll belive when we see it:beer: was it a pain to get it lined up and what not or rather simple weld in procedure?

Here is the ram mount. Not on the axle yet, hopefully that will come tomorrow morning. Here it is with the holes drilled:

Then i welded 2 pieces of 2x2x.25" angle iron to it to make a guard for the cylinder as well as to stiffen up the mount.

Here is how the cylinder sits in it:

Im pretty happy with how it turned out. Having the flat side of the angle iron will also make it easy to weld to the truss. Of course it will be gusseted as well. I will post more pictures whenever that gets done :icon_thumby: Thanks guys!
