new guy here truck wont start

i just bought an 85 ranger and i am having problems getting it to start i put a manual choke on it and it helped for a day. it turns over but and gets gas. but the carburetor has a gas leak some how and i live in fl and it has been cold lately but yesterday it was warm out and it started right up so i think the temp might have something to do with it. but i dont know what to do about that? oh and i heard something about unpluging the map sensor and trying to start it so i will try that in the morning.

The carb has a gas leak...? like there isn't any fuel in when you first start it up? or it leaks externally like around the fuel filter?

The Cold shouldn't be the problem, I start my truck up all the time even in 0 degree weather. I would check into rebuilding or cleaning the carburator up really good.

its not around the filter you know the bar that runs throught the that one side connects to gas pedle (throtle cable?) some how and the other side moves along with it but doesnt have anything attached to it. it is leaking out of the side without anything attached around that bar that goes though the carb, but i think it happens only when i try to crank it for a long time. well i geuss i could look into rebulding the carb but i did spray carb cleaner in it and all over it already cuz my friend told me too. and thanks for letting me know about the weather thing i was wondering about that. but i did replace the thermostat houseing and found that there was no thermostat so i just left it out so i dont know what effect that might have. hey thanks again.

The thermostat on the 2.8 is usually in the bottom hose. If this is the first carburetted vehicle you have owned it might be worth mentioning that when it's cold you need to push the gas pedal to the floor two or three times to pump some fuel into the intake. These things usually start right away, even when it's minus forty, as long as you use the right proceedure.

Your talking about the bar that controls the butterfly flaps? If so there shouldn't be any fuel related stuff around that area except teh fuel coming out of the venturis or rings or whatever they are called and if you have been cranking it awhile I guess it could potentially run out that way. There should be a choke connection on the other side of the the throttle bar that allows the chock to open up when the pedal is pushed down far enough to let air in from the choke plate even when its still cold. I would suggest holding the Choke open partially with a pencil or somthing and pump the gas 2 or 3 times before turning it over.

Where did you look for the thermostat? on top? Because on our rangers its funky and actually located on the bottom of the engine at the lower radiator hose. and if there isn't a thermostat down there it isn't nessicarily bad but the engine will never properly warm up and have really bad emissions leading to fouled plugs carbon build up in the engine which would dirty the oil and a clogged cat from all of the excess unburned carbon and fuel. So I would reccomend installing a thermostat. I am going to go do mine shortly actually I'll take som pictures.
