Hi guys, my name is William and i have an 00 Explorer and a 08 Ranger...

As i said, i have some questions.

my 4.0 SOHC explorer has the 5r55 auto transmission from the factory, and ive broken it around 4 times. i want to swap to a manual so i can forget the transmission and start modding the engine...thing is, i can swap a m5r1hd trans the 4.0 ranger has but i've had no luck finding one around here. i can also swap in the weaker m5r1 but i dont want to risk breaking it again and getting myself in the same situation i am right now...So, i was told i could use a t5 v6 mustang transmission and i can get it for $2300 new from ford (overpriced)...so what would you guys recommend? which trans should i swap in my truck? can you point me in the right direction? parts needed, problems i can encounter?

thx in advance...lol its great to see how lowered and lifted trucks owners coexist in the same forum hahaha you dont see that every day.

here are my trucks.

the m5odr1 is not nearly as weak as the auto trans. mine has 165,000 on it and its still running fine, and I beat the crap out of it. Im sure the HD is hard to find because the m5odr1 is the most common other than the auto which by reading the forums apparently is "weak". What RVB does the HD version even come in???

BTW nice exploder. murdered out looks good.

Well it would be way easier to do the swap with a donor vehical for the pedals and clutch and stuff, perefferably one of the same year and engine, because the computer will need switched to accomidate the lack of a transmission signal or whatever. and with the same engine cause it will bolt up nice.

so u think i should be OK with the m5r1?

Should be fine with the mazda trans as it comes behind the SOHC enigne in RBV's. The M5od-R1HD's came in all 01+ 4.0 Rangers.....or backed behind any RBV 4.0L SOHC, like the explorer.

If you're 2wd, YUP! You can take a '05+ T5 from a 4.0L Mustang and it'll bolt right in and be functional. Rear shaft may have to be modified, but i'm unsure. I think RPS has some threads on it, and we maybe do here too...idk. You'll have to do some PCM changes at the dealer to get rid of the Park/Neutral rev limiter, but it's nothing that hasn't been done before. And it really isn't all that hard either. I helped my buddy convert his auto '01 ranger to a manual a few months back.

Here's the thread covering the build.... it's alot of pages...but...VERY imformative on this swap on newer gen rigs...

By the way...I FREAKINNNN looooooove that Ploder!! DWB FTW! DWB + Black is one HOT combo if I say so myself. lol.

indeed it is :) thanx for the comments...i try to stay away from chrome as much as i can. ill be painting the headlights of the ranger soon. ill let yall know how it comes out. heheh

you guys are saying i should be fine with the m5r1, but its just that i have a much heavier vehicle and i will be modding the engine as well as driving the shit out of it...i want to be sure.

I drove the shit out of my M5od-r1hd everyday and have for the past 5 years. BUT....I managed to blow out 2nd gear in my stock trans that had 60k or so on it. Plenty supercharge their m5r1's without issues. They are pretty weak compared to a T5, but they do their job I suppose. Remember, like I said...the M5odR1hd came in your truck if it was equipped with a manual.

One thing that's ALWAYS been notorious for these trannys..... damn slave cylinders. Like I said...I drive mine as it wants to be driven. I drop the trans to replace the slave once every year. It's part of owning a manual trans late model Ranger/RBV I suppose.

POST MOAR PICS OF THE PLODER!!!!

my truck actually has the 5r55 that came with it from the factory...

thanks for the link bro, i saw a mustang t5 trans listed on the "autowrecking" site and emailed the guy and he said he could ship it to me but first i need a business address...also the shipping is going to kill me because i am in Puerto Rico. what i have in mind is just swapping the trans and reflash the comp with an XCal2 so i have less things to worry about haha...

i just need like a list of parts i need so i can start putting them together and hopefully swap it before 2009 ends.
the t5 has hydraulic clutch system right? the flywheel from the mustang should fit right? i guess i also need the starter from the mustang...what im worried about the most is the wiring and the sensors...i think many of the plugs of the auto just wont have where to connect to...or should i just forget the t5 thing and get the m5r1(non hd)?? i just have a mess in my mind and cant figure out where to start haha...

you want more pics? ok so here we go...
the truck has been in the family since new and i got it as a gift when i graduated from high school...my parents bought a 05 and i got the old one.
the first thing i did was lower it, then diamond cut headlights, along with the XLT chrome grille...

the planetary gear of the trans kept breaking so i bought the ranger..
i also bought this "donor" but ended up being too old (it had the FM146 trans which wouldnt last a second in my vehicle)

so i sold it and im looking for a manual trans again...then came the saleen replicas

and it is like that right now...the trans makes a very nasty grinding sound and that indicates me that it's going to break again so now im looking for a reliable trans.

Thanks for whoring!!! I really really love that ploder man....really awesome looking rig. Could you tell me about those projo fogs? Lexus you say?

I wasn't talking about specifically your exploder, i was talking about manual trans equipped 97-01 explorers.

That link I posted above has everything you'd need for swapping in a M5od-r1/r1hd in your truck. Ranger and ploder are essencially the same under the skin. Pedal assy, flywheel, starter, clutch, trans, slave cyl, master cyl, you may have the fulllength console, and those are pretty nifty with a shifter stickin' out the front cubby hole, clutch pedal position switch, and some other little odds and ends. If you have PATS, Ford will have to reflash the new pcm or your existing to make it think it's a manual truck and to match the codes to your key.

ohhh i see but...4dr explorers with the SOHC didnt have the m5r1-hd, the sport tracs had the HD version...explorers (4dr and 2dr) that were manual had m5r1(non HD) but behind the OHV engine, which of course is weaker than ours. i dont have the full length console since my truck is the base model (XLS) but it would like nice indeed. the thing about the HD version is that is very hard to find around here so ill have to buy from outside, so id rather buy the stronger T5...but idk anyone that has done this so i would be on my own...

about the fogs, i bought a pair of RX330 projectors (headlights) and fabbed some brackets and put them in my fogs with 8k bulbs(ERROR)...

thx for the compliments, you seem to be the only one interested in helping me LOL

BTW, can I use the Hurst shifter on the M5R1(non hd)??
