Superj nailed it. Heavy salt in the air/high heat and humidity/ blistering sun, all makes rust just bloom, and rubber curl.

I spent a good bit of time in and around Galveston in the late 60s, 70s, and early 80s. One long summer in Todd Shipyard that was pure hell on earth. Yes, it was clean when I bought it, no rust, low 77,000 miles, but that's probably because it sat at an auction for a while?. Its a salvaged vehicle, but was put back together straight and runs real good. I don't buy really new, expensive trucks for Island use for reasons already stated, just keep em together till they rust away.
