I was wondering how much of a pain is it to install a new flywheel in
a 1989 2.9l.

It has the mazda trans in it, The one that in there now has teeth that are worn to the point were a new starter does not make compleat contact and just made a grinding sound.

I double checked my install nothing wrong. ( 2 bolts your hard pressed to screw that up)

Anyway I have the instructions for the install and am mechanically inclined, I was just trying to decide if I want to spend 55-70 buck or what ever a garage would charge. I'm thinking if I go to a garage they will charge 400+? If its going to be a pain in the butt I will just take it in, however I would prefer to just do it my self.

When I changed mine I had the engine out and well obviously it was easy at that point......Drop the trans. pull the clutch and replace the flywheel....you should also replace the clutch as well, It mates to the flywheel surface and will not like a new flywheel surface.

Give your self a few days because to will have to drop the tcase and remove the rear shaft at the pumpkin.but if you ever took at trans out it won't be to bad.

Can easily be done in a day even taking your time, I also agree with the statement of the new clutch.if your talking about paying a shop to do it Im assuming your not worried about $ so might as well throw a new slave while your in there too.

shifter-driveshafts-tcase(4wd?)-trans.

I'd allow 2 days just in case.

Def replace the slave and clutch while you're in there.

Might even wanna consider upgrading to a 4.0 clutch and flywheel. Its 10" compared to the 8 3/8 of the 2.9's.

There isa write up on it somewhere

I did mine when I had my tranny out. I recommend that if your gonna be replacing your flywheel you might as well replace the rear main seal while your back there just for good measure. But yeah I did my rear main seal, flywheel, clutch and both pilot and throwout bearing all within a day and swapped out my tranny fluid while I was at it. Nothing beats peace of mind.

Why replace the flywheel when all you may hve to do is change out the ring gear.

Thanks for all the replies, Funny enough I have a brandnew clutch, plate, slave and a new rearmain just need to get a flywheel. I had the same thought as most of you ( while its out replace it all).

I was thinking about just getting the ring gear however due to what I was finding price wise for a ring gear vs flywheel it was better to just get the flywheel. that and everything else is going to be new so there is no point to cheap out on it now.

I have more invested in Traveler then i'm willing to tell the wife. And if it goes down again the wife will make me get rid of her :shok:

When I replaced mine...the flywheel had spider cracks all over it....Im glad it didnt blow up!....pretty scary to find that much damage on a part like that.

I just did mine, I did my oil pan gasket too, and I only had to jack my motor up like 3 in, maybe 4 and you oil pan will slide back when it clears the pump.
Just really hard to put the motor mounts in because it has a bolt and a long like pin I think for alignment. It was fairly easy, and its better than pulling the motor, in my opinion.

Hey 90bronco2, how were you able to install a new flywheel with out removing the motor or the trans? Or did I read your post wrong. FYI i'm trying to find someone out here that has more experiance with doing this to give me a hand.

I did mention a shop but I just dont trust most of those buggers, Last time I took this rig to a shop for a new clutch and it was a nightmare. They cut the lines to the slave, installed the clutch out of spec (or loose) then tried to slap all back together.

The day after I got it back the hydro line to the slave blew off and left me to the side of the road. Then even though they screwed it up they tried to charge me for the repair work. Funny enough I found and attorney and they fixed it as best they could real fast.

90 did have his trans out. There is no other way to access it.

I tried to quick fix my way through a slave once by just sliding the trans back. Didn't work, not enough room.

Not to get this thread to far off topic, but did you have the tranny removed when you did that or with everthing still hooked up?
