This question has probably been asked before (I can't find it if so) but I want to do a full exhaust replacement from headers back on my '93 splash 4.0

I'm after performance first and sound second. For sound I'd like that throaty rumble at idle and some roar at throttle but not too loud. Can anyone recommend the best set-up? I like the look of the dual exhaust but have heard arguments in favor of the single. So, what's the best set-up out there (single v. dual, pipe diameter, manufacturers, etc.)? Thanks in advance.

Im in the market as well for the 4.0 I just dropped in. Through what I've learned so far, dual exhaust is the favored choice. I'm trying to choose between Flowmasters and found this page useful.

I'll be going with the single out exhast though just save a few bucks.

go with a single in, single out 40 or 44 series (2.5 inch) dumped before the passenger rear tire. It'll sound and look boss. performance wise you're not going to gain anything from adding an exhaust without working on the intake and then geting a retune. sure it flows out better, but you will not have done anything to help the engine inhale better.

For example:

You could run a single in/dual out setup but true duals don't sound the greatest on v6's.
i ran a 40 series on my 03 sport with the stock piping and a res delete and it sounded awesome, but the SOHC's sound a little different than the OHV's. The OHV's are more throaty.

Yeah you wont really get more power or anything with exhaust. Nothing noticeable anyway. Just don't go over 2.5" pipe. Honestly it all comes down to your opinion. Personally I like my single in dual out super 44 and I like the exits behind the tires. Some people may not though. Basically you wont get a right or wrong or best response. Just go with what you like. Check out YouTube for exhaust sounds. Someone here posted a video of an Aero 1225 which I thought sounded good.

your setup sounds way jello

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm doing several engine mods as well so the increased breathability will be worth it. With stage 2 heads, cam, injectors, and the other standard mods available for the 4.0, will a straight dual exhaust (or an X pipe--two in two out) be a good idea or will the one in--two out be my best bet a 2.5"? Does anyone sell the full unit from headers back?

No one sells a full kit that I'm aware of. There really aren't even too many good header options available other than JBA

imo straight pipes sound bad on v6's. you might as well throw something on there to help it out a little. at least a glasspack or some thing like a stright through magnafow muffler would be worth your while.

idk, maybe the cams will help it out alot lol

Exhausting

Thanks Rose and Daniel. I'm not finding much aftermarket support either (in the exhaust area). I was liking the idea of a true dual (mufflers) exhause but am liking the idea of the 1-into-2 set up more and more after hearing some sounds of them on YT. Sounds like a Flowmater 40 series and a trip to my local pipe shop....
