new drums won't fit over shoes

I doubt there is anything wrong with the shoes. If you have a gap, something isn't "popped in." Take a good look at the adjuster and the wheel cylinder.

if the shoes wont go in any further and you can push the pistons in on the wheel cylinder then it should be the emergency brake.disconnect it and see if it gos together right-if os figure out where it is frozen and replace

ok so, obviously something is wrong because it won't pivot on the top without the right side spreading apart. The left side(towards the front of the car) will move fine and stay on the pivot bolt but the right side will move away from the pivot bolt. I put a new wheel cylinder on it so I have no clue what the problem could be. I'm using duralast shoes part # 705 from autozone. I found another post on here about the someone that had a problem using duralast shoes and them not fitting for a 9" drum. I wonder if the problem is the same for the 10". Also should the shoes be the same size? I know most cars have a primary and secondary.

I just can't believe that I have been working on this for a couple days now(after work) and I can't figure it out. I've done engine/tranny swaps, suspension work, etc and these drum brakes are kicking my ass

I'm going to go snap some pictures and maybe you guys can see something that I'm missing. :icon_bounceblue:

Ok, I'm going to say it now. SPeaking as a Ford tech, if you can't figure out why the drums don't fit over the shoes -- you shouldn't be repairing your own brakes. Tow it somewhere to get fixed right before you end up killing yourself or someone else.

Please.

okay, i see a few problems.
red- idk if its me, or the pic, but looks warped.
blue- the retaining pin is off center, and the retaining spring is fully compressed
yellow- the shoe is not seated on the pivot!
green- this one is not compressed(what it should look like) and the pin looks centered

the shoes look like they are on the wrong side???

it seems a lot like your ebrake is stuck on, the cable may be frozen up, give a pull on the ebrake lever in the drums and try and free it up.

0k..the shoes are on correctly-the smaller brake shoe should be in the front and it is called the primary shoe and the longer one in the back is called the secondary shoe- siip

ok and like i told u before your emergency brake is frozen or there is a problem that lies within the emrgency brake setup

It looks like the parking brake lever is slightly forward and/or the shoes you bought have warped or bent frames. I think that your parking brake lever is partially forward and you need to pry it back by using a depression on the backing plate or the axle tube as the fulcrum. You should have replaced the hardware also!!

thats what i have been saying just about from the begiingin it is the e brake

Agreed, if the shoes are cocked like that the ebrake is deffinatly on

Last time this happened to me I said F it and disconnected the E brake. Someday I'll get a new cable...

i worked on a ranger from the east coast when i tried to put the drums back on after the shoes where replaced the would not kit. i found the e brake cables rusted. replaced
cables and everything went back in ok

I am having the exact smae problem!

Guys,

I am having the same problem as JB - I installed the new shoes, and have backed off the adjuster, but the frum will not fit over the shoes.

Looking at all the posts, I'm inclined to believe there is a problem with the emergency brake. It has never worked quite right since I got the truck, so I will disengage it and see if the drums fit over the shoes then as suggested.

If this is the problem, how do I replace the e-brake cable?

Thanks,

Paul

Disconnected E-Brake - still not going on.

I still do not know why my drum will not go on over the new shoes.
I did not connect the e-brake this time, and put it all back together. It is still just too wide for the drum to go over the new shoes.

I'm getting to my witt's end. I did this several times on my old 1990 Ranger and never had a problem. This is day #2 that I have not been able to get this to work.

I will take and post some pics shortly.

Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

Paul

Pics

This is the driver's side. I took the wheel & drum off the passenger side to look and compare to make sure I was putting everything back together properly.
