ive been doing some recent mods to my computer. i got it from a friend in trade for a ps3.

the computer is decent but i want it to go faster. the next thing i wanna upgrade is the processor. my budget for a processor is about $100. on tigerdirect Ive found tricore and quad cores for $100. but i dont know very much about processors so idk which would be a good find. some tri cores have more #mh'z than quads from what ive seen.

heres the problem: he said he built this computer from scratch, so this mother board isnt the stock one (i dont think) so how do i find out what cpu will mount to my motherboard?

The only way to really know is to find the manufacturer and model number on the board. You also need to make sure your power supply has a power connector for a quad chip.

This should give you most of the information on what is inside your computer.

thanx dude! that worked well. found out that the board is a

ECS A780GM-M3 1.0

now i dont know if this is a good board or a bad board. but itl ooks to be a good board when i look at it. has 6 sata spots. and the pci 2.0 for the graphics card. but how do i know if a cpu will plug into this?

Sounds like an AMD board. Still need more info though. This program: http://www.piriform.com/speccy should get us more info. Go under File>Save as text file... then post content of txt that is generated.

Edit: My post came too late. Oh well. The 2 cpus you posted are the same. They link to the same page. But I see you are looking for AM2+ cpus. The one you posted should be real nice. A Black Edition though would be even nicer.
