Hey guys,

I just pick up an 85' Bronco II Eddie Bauer yesterday for $500. The body is pretty straight and the interior is pretty clean. It hasn't been on the road since 08/09 from what I know but it was supposedly running less than a year ago. The last owner put a new carb, distributor and maybe a few other things from what I can tell. The wiring has been messed with a little bit where there is a few splices and one white connector that isn't being used as well as a loose blk/white stripe wire. I was told that his son had it running and driving but the timing was off.

I through some gas and a battery in it and hoped for the best. I sprayed starter fluid in the carb and it seems like it wants to run but is starving for fuel. I checked the fuel line on the carb and doesn't seem like has been getting any fuel. So my question where is the best place to start with this thing? I'd love to get it fired up for now and before too long do the duraspark conversion. Another question is how much would this cost me? The junkyards in this area are quite limited on older vehicles so I would probably by new. Also does this eliminate the computer completely. It also looks like it has been tempered with.

Any and all help/recommendations are helpful :icon_cheers:

first I would start with getting an accurate fuel pressure reading at the carb...

Bare with me I haven't done much work with naturally aspired motors. Are fuel pressure gauges a loaner tool from an auto parts store? Also once connected do I try and start the vehicle to get a proper test?

You indicated that you weren't getting fuel at the carb. Time to work backwards from there or forwards from the tank. I'm not familiar with those years engines, does the fuel pump reside on the engine or in the tank. If in the tank you should be able to hear it run when first started up, also check power if in tank. Carbs use low pressure so a cheap vacuum/pressure gauge that goes to ~ 10 psi will work. Pressure is probably supposed to be at ~5 psi [double check #'s]. There is also a certain volume needed in a certain time, those numbers would be in a manual or online too. Put in clean filter, there may be one in carb and inline, both or just one....not sure.

I believe it has an in tank pump and an inline pump.

An 85 I think should only have a mechanical fuel pump bolted to the side if the engine.

From what I've read in my Chiltons manual I only have a mechanical pump mounted to the left front corner of the block. I'm going to pick a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow and see if I can't figure something out with the fuel. As far as the duraspark conversion goes I'm having a hard time finding all the parts with the parts numbers listed in the tech library.

Another question regarding my transmission. I have a manual Mitsubishi FM145 transmission and the shifter assembly is pretty sloppy where I can turn the arm 360 degrees. I found the part # E6TZ7210C but the assembly seems to obsolute and can't find a new one anywhere. Any ideas?

A little bit of an update. I stopped by to rent a fuel pressure gauge and it was out so I've decided to go over the whole fuel system. I pulled the fuel pump last night (what a pita) and plan on dropping the tank this afternoon. I think either my fuel pump is clogged up and/or I've got some crud in my tank from sitting for awhile. I've got a long list of parts I'm going to be ordering in the next couple days. The ol' 2.8 is going to get a bit of an overhaul :headbang:

I also finally found a replacement shifter assembly for my FM145 after a lot phone calls. Slowly and surely she will be up and running again; I hope :dunno:
