Well, picked up a 1988 ranger for my kid, decided I better sign up for a forum where I could get some help. Body and frame are good, rear main seal is bad, brakes are soft. It ran all the way to the gas station, put some gas in and it wouldn't start.......
Looks like it's probably the starter (probably gummed up with the oil from the bad seals), but there is some questionable battery cables as well.
I went ahead and ordered a starter and all new cables. We will get it running and then worry about the rear main seal, valve cover gaskets look like they are leaking as well. (Might swap the 4.0 in sometime in the future)
Anyway, thanks for the help already provided and all the help in the future.
