found friction ware on the tip of neutral safety switch. and is there a test to determine if all its 5 terminals are working correctly

The first two (red and pink wires on later models) are for the neutral safety so if your truck starts without the clutch engaged then they are not working...the others are for shift control or rpm control while shifting so you might get codes or notice higher rpms during shifts...

I honestly have no idea how to test the other features...I only just learned of their existence a month or so ago while trying to jumper mine...

Maybe someone else knows of a test for them though...

EDIT: had to reword first part...:)

EDIT II: Ooops...how did I get that mixed up...maybe it was a cross dressing NSS I was thinking of...

NSS(neutral safety switch) is only used on automatics, manual trans use Clutch switch.

On NSS 2 of the wires are for Reverse(backup) lights, 12volts in when key is in RUN position, other wire goes to Reverse light bulbs.
Other 3 are for PARK/Neutral in '86 "I think"

Bottom of page here: http://www.ford-aod.com/Classic_Mustang_AOD_Transmission_Conversion.htm

There is a diagram of 4 wire NSS
The 5th wire was added to give Coil/TFI module full battery power when starter motor is engaged.

So 1 and 2 will be connected when trans is in reverse.
3 and 4(+5) will be connected when trans is in PARK or Neutral.

5 could also be a Ground for the computer/4WD module, i.e. it will be grounded to NSS case when trans is in PARK or Neutral, this allows shifting into 4WD Low.

As far as what position the NSS plunger needs to be in for these connections....................??????
