So this not really a build thread yet, but I believe I've jumped head first in to quicksand... I'm swapping out my 98s 3.slow for a 5.0. The donor is a 2001 explorer 5.0 that I pulled everything from, engine, trans, steering column, entire wiring harness, ECM, etc, etc. well I've begun tear down on the block to rebuild it and well I'm lost. The original owner rarely changed the oil. And ran almost pure water for coolant. When they pulled the engine they removed the upper part of eh intake and block the 8 ports with tissue paper which allowed water in to the cylinders and heads... The walls don't look rusty after I cleaned the water out an the block is in good over all condition. I would like to rebuild it before I drop it in... I jut have never done this before. I'm great with any tool you give me and never have I not completed a task. Any way what rebuild kits would you recommend, if possible I would like to get links, I plan on parting and polishing the heads and rebuilding those as well. What performance cam would y'all recommend. I have a budget of a little over 1500 to rebuild both the trans and engine, and get them in their new home. Please help.....

rebuild

First you need to pull it all the way down and measure the bore the crankshaft, to see if it will just be a re-ring and bearing overhaul or a rebore and grind rebuild, also check the block deck to besure it doesnt need resurfacing as well as the heads, 1500 would about cover a good stock over haul but not much more, get a look at the overhaul specs and go from there, then shop for good parts, forget the cam and stuff that will be 1/3 of your budget, over a good stock one in a kit its the odds and ends like new hoses tune up stuff and things that pop up that will eat the cash fast

Ok, ill try to get here completely stripped down and measured by the beginning of next week. Who would you recommend in rebuild kits, or should i piece my own kit together?

Alright, can I reuse the old cam, or is there any cam that's new that is close to the old cams specs with maybe a little more loopy idle
Did the compression specs and it looks like some where between 9.7:1 and 9.8:1 would I need to run mid grade 89 or premium 91-93.
Also I'm keeping the EEC-V
Can anyone please help me, I need to get my order placed so the shop can hone the walls

For a re-build kit, all you would need is one for a '93' Mustang A stock GT cam would be a cheap upgrade. Lot of times it is cheaper/easier to buy an all ready built short block such as or just have the machine shop based on what they find is needed. Usually they can buy parts a lot cheaper than you can.

Well i dont trust mechanics as far as i could throw one. But isnt the upper on a 93 different from a 01?

Sure there is a difference in uppers but those are not included in a rebuild kit. The gasket kit you show has the wrong intake gasket and probably water pump also. Never used Ford gaskets, gone straight to Felpro, better. Mechanics do not assemble those engines. You trust your machenest to bore and turn things right, same goes for those who assembly the motors. They have the tools and know the shortcuts.
