I am thinking about replacing my current 4.0L (03 4x4) with a remanufactured engine from Promar out of Patterson NJ. As many others have had, I am having the timing chain rattle, and it is getting much worse. I got a quote to do the timing chain and it was $2700, If I take out the engine, they can do it for $1200-1500. To get a new engine it is $2499 from Promar, no tax or shipping charges.

What do you guys think, should I go with the new engine? I am thinking that would be a good option so I know what I have, since I bought this truck used less than a year ago. The engine also comes with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. I would appreciate any input you may have on this!

If it were me I would take it out and take it to one of our many local engine builder/machine shops and have a little port polish bore work and get a fresh engine back with more power for around a grand.

But if I was going to do that I'd probably v-8 swap it.

Thanks for all the replies! I am still thinking about which road to take on this one...

Research how to do it, buy the parts from Ford (they are updated), and do it all for well under that price.
