ok so i have the 2.3 duratec and want to know what gears i should run with 33x12.50r15 bfg's? should i run 4.56 or 4.88? (planning on getting an 8.8 rear end)

4.88 or 5.13. Running 33's with my 3.0 and 3.73's really sucks.(glad I have a manual trans) Thinking 4.88's would be perfect for my motor, so with the 4cyl maybe 5.13.

Manual or automatic? I have 5.13s in my 88 with 31s and I'm happy with mine. My previous manual did not shift well, which was a pain as the shifts come early with short gears. With 33s, I say 5.13s, or at least 4.88s.

my truck is a manual.

and the reason i asked this question is cause ive seen a couple lima 2.3l's runnin 33's with 4.56 gears and do pretty good. but i think i wanna run 4.88's but still not completely sure

At least 4.88s. 5.13s wouldn't be a terrible choice either, especially if you wanna go bigger in the future.

haha im not gonna go any bigger. and im not going over 4.88's cause i still needa go freeway speed. and hopefully with the 4.88's i can still use 5th

With 3.73s and 31s I was using second gear to pass on the highway. I got the 5.13s in case I decided to go with 33s. Even with the 31s though, I only turn about 2500 at 60 mph.

4.56s would gear you back roughly stock, which would be good for the speedo. Given the extra size and weight of the 33s, 4.88s would give you a little extra grunt and not leave you gearbound on the highway. Just my .02.

5.13's with 31's?

I have 4.88's with 35s and around 70 is around 3000rpm I think(3.0 though). Can't remember exactly. Its a toss up really. Probably 4.88 would be best for first gear.

5.13s with 33s is only 2650 RPM at 65MPH. The 2.3 won't mind.

4:10 is all you will need with 33's. I run 33x12.5x15's with a 4:10 and I get right at 24 mpg on the highway. Now, I have a 4.0. My buddies who have the 2500 Mazda or a Ranger with the 4 banger with 33's are running 4:10 as well and they love it. They get good gas mileage as well. You can go 4:88 at the most and that is as much as you should go.

4.10 with 33's? on a 4 banger? idk about that...

and 5.13's with 31's is crazy, im runnin 4.10 gears with 31's and im running 3000 rpm's in 5th gear going 70

Did you regear your speedometer when you put 31s on it? You should be closer to 2500 at 70 with your current setup. However, if you went from 26's to 31's without regearing your speedo it would be off by a factor of about 1.2. At an indicated 70 mph, you would actually be going 84, and turning around 3k rpm. It appears there are varying preferences about what gears are best. To each their own. I love the 5.13s in my truck and wouldn't run anything else in hindsight. That said, my motor is happier with a little more rpm than a stock 4cyl, and a stocker may work better with longer gears.
