My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
Looking for valve seats for an EFI 5.0L. Summit lists them but they are pricey.

I was going to swap in a OBDII MAF 351 into my Bronco but the deal fell through, the guy decided to keep the engine. He bought the donor truck for its transmission and wiring harness thinking the wiring and transmission would fit a 460 and we all know that the MAF harness and transmission will not work for a 460. He offered to sell me the 460 for the same price but his transmission is shot so i would be stuck looking for an 4x4 E4OD for a 460.

So I am going to seal up my 5.0L as best I can with new valve seats (no blue smoke or gassy smell in the oil to indicate worn rings) and new gaskets so I can drive it while I search for a rebuildable 351.

anybody besides Summit list these? I don't need fancy, just to seal up the engine

$60 for gasket set from autozone
$20 for an oil pan gasket
$70 for Head bolts
$18 for intake bolts
$40 for head cleaning and magnafluxing

Edit: the head and intake bolts are cheaper through Summit, and the oil pan gasket is rubber with steel core..... the one from autozone is silicone. which is better?

I don't really want to spend $120 for valve seats if i can get a better price elsewhere.... specially since I can rebuild the engine I have for $600 a master rebuild kit that includes forged pistons and new tungsten valve seats.

thank you, and I will keep it in mind........ my local machine shop is going to work me a deal on a 351 that they rebuilt and the guy never came in and picked it up......... my 302 core plus 75 hours of labor.

if youre going to spend that much money anyway, buy a Roush big block.

it would be expensive, but it would be cool.

yeah, can't afford it, if it comes to that I have to rebuild it myself and i haven't rebuilt an engine in 17 years and even then I was supervised, I have never done one by myself..... when i need an engine I usually get a used one and replace all the gaskets but that is proving difficult around here...... people are just wanting more than I am willing to pay for a used engine............ when you get to $600 on a high mileage used engine you might as well rebuild what you got...... you know, I remember being able to buy a used low mile 302 for $100 because nobody wanted them.

I know why the compression was so low (78 - 86 worst to best)..... the head bolts were loose. I was going to start pulling the heads off to get them to the Machine shop so I took the Intake manifold and valve covers off (intake gasket is infact bad and I broke 2 bolts in the back getting it out and 3 were loose) the exauhst manifold bolts came out easy (no fighting, I expected to brake a couple) and while looking at the head bolts it looked like they were loose ........ 1/2 of them were only finger tight and the others took no effort at all to loosen them with my 8" ratchet.

going to finish pulling the heads off and see what the cylinder walls look like and then take the oil pan out and try to peak at the bearings..... if the walls and the bearings are all right I will put down new a new gasket set and go from there.

it wasn't like it had been that way for a while .... more like they weren't torqued enough and they loosened over time ...... its only gone about 1500 miles since the engine went in....... maybe they did replace the head gaskets b4 install.......

it was running rough because the cap had the standard firing order and this engine is a roller cam from a later model with the 351 firing order and it has never really run smooth ..... I switched the firing order around the right way and got it to run semi smooth but the fuel injectors need to be repinned at the computer before it would run right...... but maybe the vibration from rough runnings made all the bolts back out......

going to repin the fuel injectors and replace the gaskets (if the block checks good) and see if I can get it running smooth........

ofcourse it was running ........ its a ford........

somebody told me a plugged cat could cause it to do that and my cat is definitely fubar'd
