Alright so i've been truck hunting since my ranger got wrecked and have found a couple of things.

1. Why are Toyota tacomas so expensive.
2. Why are Dodge rams so cheap.

I've kinda narrowed it down to an 07 four door tacoma for $27000 (probably get it down) or a full size truck which are around the same price. 05 Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab for $21000 with around the same miles....what to do?

I know it may seem silly posting this on the Ranger station...but i know ya'll will be harsh and honest!!

imports hold their value, while domestics dont.

it used to be because imports were much more reliable...but anymore most vehicles are good for 200,000 miles or more...so i buy cheaper domestics.

For what its worth, I worked on Toyotas for a year and a half in San Antonio and they seemed to be very well designed. (Except for the Land Cruiser, I don't know what happened there) Fairly easy access when replacing most parts -oil pump, pwr steering, water pump, starter, interior bits etc. and really, straight forward remove and replace.
I just bought a 92 Ranger and it seems to be similar as far as straight forward R&R stuff. Except for replacing the timing chain cover and the oil pan gasket.... You really shouldn't have to lift up an engine to replace a $9 gasket. It's just plain wrong.
I should mention that my truck gets 24-29 mpg on the highway. 3.0 manual 65mph with few hills. I just had to give props to Ford for this one.

This is normal on many cars and trucks, especially today. There's just so much in the way what with independent suspension subframes and sway bars.

Toyota has a stellar reputation. Dodge, not so much.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWjTbiYo3x0 i know this is a different truck but after seeing this i dont think i will buy a toyota, im just stickin with my Fords

After watching Ford's "The Truth about Trucks" videos. Almost makes me want a new F-150. Unfortunely, wallet size doen't allow me.

If you have to choose between those two, I would go Toyota. Toyota do make nice small pickups. I especially like the last model before the current one. Just wish the seats had a little more height. But everything else is good about them in my opion.

A third would be Nissian trucks. I've got to work on a co-employee 96' Nissian truck w/ the 2.4L & 4x4 (Man. Trans & Transfer). Nice little pickup to beat around the bush.

my only thing about 150's or silverados or rams is the gas milage...but they are still the same as taco's as far as price is concerned...so do the rams have a poor reputation as far as reliability is concerned?

I doubt this has anything to do with the price, but, the Rams are notorious for rust. The Dakotas are notorious for rust. IMO Dodge has a rust issue all around. My current beater is rusted out on both bedsides to the extent that the wheel opening lip is completly gone. What can i say for a $300.00 temporary set of wheels.

Ditto
Almost all domestics have crap for resale especially Ford. The question here is how long to do plan to keep a vehicle. If your going to keep it for a long period, then resale value really does not matter. For reliability.Toyota hands down. Why do you think D/C has a lifetime warranty on its drivetrain?
My 2c

Unfortunately, it doesn't pass on to the next owner of the vehicle after the original.

I personally don't like the new Tacomas; too bulky with too much plastic. Also, the 4.0 is a gas hog and, at least when I saw it at the New England Auto Show, required you to use at 89. Kinda silly IMO.

comparing a new taco to a new ranger, their listed gas milage really isent that different...the ranger may even get worse. 89 does seem silly...i'll have to check on that
