So I have a 1997 ranger 2.3 with a/c and 93k miles. I have a problem where a couple times a week when I have the heat going and I either push the clutch in or shift into neutral the rpm will raise around 500rpm and refuse to come down. Even if I come to a complete stop. The instant I turn the directional switch to the off position the rpms will immediately drop. The blower speed and hot/cold switch does not seem to affect the problem at all. So far I have checked all hoses for vacuum leaks including behind the switch cluster and glove box, replaced the iac valve and tps sensor, cleaned the maf sensor, twice cleaned the throttle body and twice I have cleaned and lubricated the throttle cable and linkage assembly. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated!!

Sounds like its kicking up for the ac to run, when this happens, does it only do it in defrost, or does it do it in all heat settings?

From what I have experienced and I have yet to run it much on ac much but it will do it on blend (front and floor vents), defrost and floor and just defrost.

And my compressor kicks on and off when it's on front and floor vents too. Not just defrost.

Sounds like 2 things ur Iac is opening to raise the rpm so the alternator can keep up with the power demand, ur AC pump Plus ur fan blower are big power suckers, im not sure of the exact amount of voltage to run the 2, the other thing is ur alternator no longer has the balls it did when came from the factory

I'm wondering if I have a vacuum leak in the heater control valve. I'm not sure what other vacuum devices are controlled by the directional hvac switch.
