So my bronco needs a new tranny, there is a ad in the paper that says:

"Ford 5spd manual tranny from 88 Ranger with 2.9L engine works well gauranteed..$425"

My bronco is an auto, is this worth it? What would be needed to get this to work? How long would it take? What type of money (besides what I spend on the tranny) would I have to put into this ti make it work?

no, its not worth it. A manual swap to get away from an A4LD is defiantly worth it, but if you are going to go to all that trouble, get an M5OD, its a stronger tranny and has better gearing. I just put one in my 87 and it feels like it still has all its pulling power but I think I'm getting around 25 MPG out of my 2.9 now.

Also, since the 2.9 mitsu trannies aren't as strong as the mazda 4.0 units, and the mazdas are a dime a dozen that one you are looking at isn't worth $400 either.

Okay well I have an offer on a 5 spd FM146 tranny, well actually a whole running BII and parts needed to make the swap possible. For $200 would this be any better? Really all I want to do is just get the damned thing moving. Apparently the "parts truck" runs like crap but according to the dude the tranny is in good shape.

I would still get the M5OD... Like he said its way stronger. But for a whole parts rig your set all you need to do is swap over all of the parts from one to the other including the computer. With an 88 it might actually be a Mazda tranny too...

yeah, that b2 for $200, def worth it just for parts, even if you don't use the trans (which may be a mazda unless the guy knows its a 146).
