Need some advice on Engine swap

I've been reading about a lot of the swaps, but it always seems that my particular situation isn't covered.

I have an 87 Supercab 2WD ranger. I have replaced the 2.9L V^ twice so far and it runs like crap. I have another 2.9L, but I also now have a 4.0L V6 out of a 95 Supercab 4WD. I do not have the transmission from the 95.

The 4.0L has about 230k on it, but it ran good when we junked the truck(massive frame rot under the bed, & my son wanted the axles for his 88 4WD). I really don't want to rebuild the 4.0L because at that point I'm into a 302 swap budget.

Couple of questions:

1. is the 4.0L worth the swap or should I just get a 302?(honestly I'd rather go to a carb anyway)

2. Do I have to swap my dash? I have the 95 cab & dash but I really dont know that I want to swap to it if I dont have to.

3. Can I use my transmission with the 4.0L? My OD doesn't work, but it still got about 18-20 with the 2.9L.

I figure the 302 swap would cost more, but I really only want to do 1 more swap on this truck and be done with it. Honestly not too worried about gas mileage as this truck will be tagged as an antique.

Thanx
