I bought an 87' Std Cab Ranger 2.3L FI about two weeks back, The person I bought if from is a wholesaler and told me he would get the car smogged at a alter date because he was going to be out of the area for a week or so. Before I took it down to get it smogged I did an Oil & Filter Change, New Air Filter, and the skeleton exhaust hose that runs from the exhaust manifold to the airbox and also used some FI Cleaner w/ a full tank of gas.

So Today I go down to the local Fast Lane Oil Change & smog to get it smogged since the seller had already made payment arraignments for them to smog the Ranger, The Guy put the truck into the bay and then pulls it out after he see's a lil smoke coming out of the tail pipe when he revved the engine up after he just started it up. He tells me its a gross polluter and it will never smog. I said you didn't even try to smog it, how will I know what to fix if I don't see the report of whats wrong w/ it as far as high carbon levels and such. He then told me I can pay them $90 to do the smog test and see whats Wrong, WTF is this a scam or what ? I am just wonder what I can use to stop any if all the smoke from escaping from the tail pipe w/ the use of Restore or MMO ? I'm thinking of replacing the Plugs, Wires, Cap & Rotor and wonder if it will then pass.

I looked @ the CA Emissions thread in the Library and want to know if anyone has a Online copy of an Vacuum diagram for this 87 ?

Any Help would be greatly appreciated

Any smoke emitting from anywhere is reason for failure. The law cautions that this does not apply until the vehicle if fully warmed up to eliminate the usual vapor on cold mornings.

As you also should know it's the sellers responsibility to have an emission inspection prior to the sale.

You need to work it out with the seller.

Yea I'm going to try and make him get this shit straightened out but he's been ducking my calls. So I am basically forced to handle this issue by myself, that's why I am asking for any help that could help get this thing to pass smog.

Go to www.autozone.com and create an account. Add your truck and they literally have an ENDLESS amount of diagrams/charts/specs for your truck. It has helped me a lot. I know for a fact they have your vac diagram, it is really big though.

grab a book too. im dealing with this same thing. a new law passed last march (08). if any smoke is seen coming out the tail its a fail no matter if the emmissions are ok or not. im in the middle of a compelte rebuid on mine to get it to pass. lifters were done, the piston rings were gone, the timing belt was on its last leg. basically it needed this for a while.
anyways you can try some stop leak but if its smoking at all you cant pass in california :(

Update

I got another 2.3L installed, New Clutch, Water pump, Catalytic Converter, and it finally passed smog this evening with flying colors :yahoo:

well that must have been cheaper than checking the PCV valve. or not.

congrats on your pass though

I wish it was just the PCV valve however my old 2.3L's #3 cylinder was bad and the CAT was basically just a Straight tube (No Inners) that is why it wouldn't pass.
