Rear axle seals leaking. Need parts nos for seals and bearings. 1996 Ranger 4.0 V6 4WD 3.73 locking. Any recommendations on these items??

Thanks,

Well, I have a few questions about your question.

1) Why do you think the bearings need replaced? Just because the seal is leaking doesn't mean the bearing behind it is bad. The seal is a rubber lip that rides over the metal axle. Metal>rubber, so if anything is going to wear down and let the fluid out it's the rubber seal. Doesn't mean the bearing is shot.

2) Why buy New Old Stock when new new stock is available. You can buy new axle seals for for the 8.8 pretty much anywhere. Napa, Autozone, Advance, dealership, rockauto... I could keep listing places, but I don't want to.

As far as recommendations, I like to buy the seals at Napa. They are similar in quality to the Ford parts, but cost less.

If you are dead set on replacing those bearings, buy Timken. Same reason. Timken made the OEM bearings, but if you buy their name rather than Ford's you get a better price.

Parts help

needs seals because its puking dope.

thought it would be a good idea to replace bearings while in there since truck has 200k on it.

appreciate your condescending advice.

thx.

I'm not trying to be condescending. I'm trying to understand the thought process behind your post. First you say you want to replace a part that generally never needs replaced. I was curious. Then you say you want to buy new old stock parts, which means ones that have been sitting in the box on the shelf for a long long time, but the manufacturer is still making the part, and it does have something of a shelf life. Again, I was curious.

Admittedly my social skill leave something to be desired, and it's a failing that frequently gets amplified over the internet since you can only read my words, not hear any inflection behind them, especially because I love explaining things, but I really wasn't trying to be condescending. I reserve that for when someone says something truly stupid. You didn't meet that requirement.

I don't see where he said he wants new old stock parts. He said he "needs parts nos," which I read as "Need part numbers." You know how "No." is an abbreviation for "number" i.e. Part No. 715342.

Could not have expressed my confused state any better. Thank you sir.

I have never seen "numbers" abbreviated "nos". I see lots of people use acronyms online without using caps.

And since "need parts nos" is not correct grammar, since its "part numbers" not "parts numbers" I went to new old stock, since that would make more sense grammatically.

At 200K, there's a good chance there's some wear on them (I've seen pitting on many @ less than 150K). Thing is though, the axle shafts will need replacing too if the bearings look bad, since the bearings ride directly on the axle, making them a mating pair.

Agreed, Timken is the brand to go with for bearings & seals. For axle shafts, look to Moser or Yukon.
