What the title says. I got a Limited slip in a explorer axle. Its 8.8. The LS seems a little weak and I want to tighten it up real tight if I can. I have read the write up in the tech section. I wish it had pictures of every thing inside the diff. Also where parts place carries the rebuild kits? And finally if I dont use the friction modifier but I will use synthetic oil, will the clutch pack destroy it self? Reason asked about not putting the friction modifier in is I want this ls to be as tight as possible. I dont want to have to weld it up due to issue with the case.

Did I ask the wrong question or in the wrong spot?

Yes, not using friction modifier will destroy the clutches. Also, if you want max traction, why not install a lunch box locker?

Actually use the Royal Purple synthetic made for LSD units. The clutches will be fine.

thanks for the help.
Can some one name these parts and the locations or orientation they go in?
A= Drive disk
B=?
C=Friction disk.

I found this. But it makes no mention of the 3rd type disk."
Each clutch pack is made up of a series of Frictions and Steels and in the factory order they go F-S-S-F-S-S-F. However, if you re-use the best two of your old Frictions in place of one of the new Steels you can re-stack them in an order that makes the diff lock better, which is F-S-F-S-F-S-F,

Most synthetic is made for them, the stuff I got was green and said it contained the additive for them.

I run the ford synthetic oil, the 85w-140 which does NOT contain modifier

And I do not add it.

the clutch material WILL NOT "Self destruct" without the modifier

what modifier does is to keep the clutches from "Chattering"
and frankly there are two kinds of limited slip diffs, those that
don't chatter and those that WORK.

Friction modifier makes the clutches SLIP to prevent chattering.
Chattering makes soccer moms take their explorer back to the
dealer and ask "what's that noise, when I'm parking at the mall?"

Agree with Allan.
I do use the modifier, but very little. could easily go without it.

The modifier does the same thing as using the wrong oil in a motorcycle with a wet clutch, it makes the clutches slip. You get longer life and better grip with plain oil.

Ken.

I am gonna go straight gear oil and see how that goes. This is a trail rig and I want the LS to be as tight as can be and not destroy itself.

Is it OK to use just reg gear oil? And not synthetic?
