i have a 1986 2.9l i am getting a lot of blow by the oil comes out my dip stick . what can cause this to happen and then i have a problem with the starter making a loud klunk when going to start it but it will start and run but it sounds like someone is trying to hit it that is how hard it is

rings and valve guides cause blowby put a new PCV valve in and see if it stops if not do a compression test. how is the oil level if it is too full change the oil and put a new filter in look close at the oil for any water and if it smells like fuel. Pull the starter and get a new one they are not very expensive and not worth fixing just get one with a good warranty

change the pcv at least yearly put some good synthetic oil 5w30 in with a motorcraft filter change every 4 grand.

ok i will change the pcv valve and see what happends and i will look at the stater . do you know and thing about the charging system i need a little help with that too

does your alternator have the built in regulator or is it on the drivers wheel well

yes i have a volt meter and it is built in the altnator it will not charge all the grounds are on the that regulator on the back of the alt that says ground here to test if i put the ground from the batt it will charge at 18 volts but if i take it off it eill not charge.

whoa you need to slow down measure the battery voltage with the key off write it down then start the motor and measure the voltage with the engine at 1500 rpm at the battery write it down then turn the lights on high beam and the heater on high and measure the voltage at 2000 rpm at the battery then get back to me

Do not jump wires or do anything unless you know what you are doing in the tech library here is the procedures for testing and troubleshooting the charging system and if you were getting 18 volts anywhere I hope you didnt ruin something.

here is the link use the procedures for the internalregulatorhttp://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/chargingsystem.htm

so what is happening is it the head lights not working or are they just not there

If I cant see what you are talking about you need to get all your wiring together you dont want a bunch of loose wires hanging around. make sure all the connectors are together all the grounds are clean and tite no bare wires then fully charge the battery and measure the volts it should be around 12.5 volts then start the motor and run it about 1500 rpm and you should read no more than 2.5 volts over battery voltage or around 14.8 to 15 volts
