im trying to find a 5spd manual that will hook up to a 351W, but i want to keep my 4x4. any suggestions on tannys?

Ford in their infinite wisdom built the 5.8EFI V8 with onem 5sp trans, the ZF built M5HD.

This is a big bulky trans with a great ~5:1 granny gear.
It does however use the SAME internal slave cylinder as a Ranger
(either the '88-92 aluminum slave or the '93-on plastic slave)

This will however require the use of an F-series t-case THE most
compact F-series T-case is the NP-205 but tracking one down will be difficult.

most others won't easily fit between a Ranger's frame rails.

That being said, what makes a given transmission "Required" to stand up
to a certain level of torque is also affected by the weight traction and
gearing in the vehicle you are installing it into.... and factoring in the
weight of a ranger the FAR-MORE-COMMON, far more compact and far lighter
M5OR-R2 used in F-series trucks behind the 4.9 and 5.0 engine would be entirely adequate for a 5.8 in a Ranger.

But you'd still need to use an F-series Transfer case.

Of course if you can afford an Atlas you won't need to search for an NP205...

On another note probably THE easiest ford T-case to set up with a home built "twin stick" sto shift 2wd>4x4 and Hi>Lo seperatly is an NP205, but the one drawback is that it only has a 2:1 reduction range... though I question the need for all that much reduction with a 5.8 engine....
