so I have a 94 ranger that had a 4.0 in it so I said its time to swap it and I did with a 2.3t. I bought a wiring harness from ron francis wiring harness and hooked it up started the truck and it ran really rich and I also had a bad exhaust leak so I bought new gasket's and put it back together and bought a new bbk fuel regulator and now im thinking I need to wire the fuel pump into the stock relay instead of a toggle switch. any ideas on what to do?

Hi. Are you running a VAM and a stock Ford system or an aftermarket system? How much fuel pressure? Got a wide band o2 sensor? I could go on with the questions, but instead how about you providing more details on what you have so we can help?

Running the fuel pump through a toggle switch is one of your problems, the ECU can't control the fuel pump, part of your rich issue. The ECU cycles the fuel pump from time to time. Not to mention its a safety hazard. How are you tuning this setup?

why in the world would an old school system want to cycle the fuel pump with the engine running? in the 80's they hadn't even thought of fuel pump duty cycle being used for fuel pressure adjustment... not saying it shouldn't be fixed though...

My only advise is to look at factory wiring diagrams and grab things from your factory setup, using factory wiring is usually the best route for a clean install, my engine wiring harness is a factory Ranger 2.3L harness with about 3 things added and some wires moved around at the ECM... I know you didn't have the right setup starting with a 4.0 but most of the stuff should be the same just in different locations.

Too Rich

Agreed. The fuel pump RELAY should be energized by pin 22. Don't recall if it needs the other side of relay coil attached to Signal Return (pin 46) or not,but I don't think that matters.Any good ground should be fine. Fuel pump should come on for a few seconds then shut down at initial "key on" when wired this way. Your pressure regulator should do it's job the way you currently have it set up,and if working correctly there is no way it could cause a rich condition. Pull the vacuum line off it and look/smell for the presense of fuel. If you have it,the diaphragm is ruptured and you need a new one.
I was asking for specifics on your setup as things like a misadjusted VAM can cause a too rich issue,as can many other things. Good luck.

Also...which ECM are you running? Which, if any, VAM? I've seen plenty of 2.3T setups where someone has a mismatched VAM and ECM. TPS can cause issues too. Have you pulled your codes? If so post 'em. Need LOTS more specifics in order to help you!
