Need help with my truck. Its a 1994 ranger xlt 4 cylinder and a stick shift. I think my transmission is out of fluid. I know almost nothing about stick shifts and trucks in general. How do I check my tranny fluid? I was told that it was passenger side of the tranny and its a plug. True? Also is the tranny under the passenger or driver side? One more question. What type of tranny fluid should I use. I am trying to get this done before friday because I am going on a 400 mile trip to see my parents. Thanks

Darthchet

plug in in center on passenger side.
pull plug fluid should be at bottom.
trans in in center behind engine. plug should be 3/8 square drive
takes mercon atf fluid

Like jeffro said, the plug is located on the passenger side of your trans-about the middle of it.It will be a recessed square drive(use a 3/8 ratchet with a short extension to get it out).Once removed.stick your finger in there-the fluid should be right at the bottom of the plug hole, almost ready to run out.Use only Mercon ATF.Your trans will hold 2&2/5 qts if completely dry.Use a squeeze bottle with a short piece of tubing attached to add trans fluid. Is your trans not shifting/releasing easily or making noises? If not,you may have more problems other than fluid level-I HOPE NOT!!!! How many miles are on your Ranger?

The 3/8 plug is on the transfer case. The transmission that you have will have a LARGE HEX HEAD for both the fill and drain plugs.

The plugs are on the Drivers side. They both have labels cast in to the tranny case next to the plugs. One says drain, the other says fill.

you see where the stick is in the floor? yeah that is about the middle of hte transmission.

And you should use MERCON ATF!!!!!!!!!! Not mercon V or anything like that.

Sorry for the incorrect info I gave you darthchet,I should have better attention-you have a 2wd truck.metalmacguyver is correct-you have a Mazda trans-the fill and drain plugs are on the drivers side of your trans and are appropriately marked. You should drain it and add 5.6 pints of MERCON ATF.

My truck has 53,000 miles on it. Thats it. Its making a weird noise. Thanks for info.
