Need help

Hey guys,

I have a 1985 ford ranger 2.3l, it's a 4 cylinder engine and my goal is to replace the water pump. I am currently trying to figure out how to release the tension to remove the two belts that going through all the components.

Maybe I lack some common sense but, I can't locate or know how to release tension on these two belts. I've been watching on YouTube mechanics do it but it seems like their engines have an automatic tensioner but I don't think in my case.

Anyone out there know of good instructions on how to release tension on the belts?

Should just break loose the alternator and smog or AC pump

In the second picture you have the alternator at the top, you see the slot on the right hand side of the alternator bracket, loosen the bolt in that slot and alternator will slide down enough to remove the belt.

In the last picture you see the A/C compressor, same setup as alternator there will be a slot with a bolt, loosen the bolt to move compressor and remove belt.

In the second pic... See that slot to the left of the alternator. Loosen that bolt and push the alternator down. You may have to back the long bolt on the right side off a half turn or so to allow the alternator to pivot. There should be a similar adjustment slot on the air conditioning compressor. which you show in the third photo.

Hopefully I caught you before you put the new pump on it helps to take a garden hose and flush the block out with high pressure water to get as much of the sediment out as possible. Backflush the radiator and heater core while your at it. Just a tip.
