okay, i have a 1995 ranger xlt 4.0 with the 4r44e automatic transmission. about a week ago i was wheeling out behind my house and sunk my truck in a river. by the time i was able to get it out water had been up over half of the hood, so most of the engine was underwater. i took off the intake and dried it, pulled the sparkplugs and turned the engine over to get the water out of the cylinders, drained the oil and replaced with new, as well as the transmission fluid. the truck ran fine for 2 days and then i was driving home and lost all drive, the rpm's would just go up but the truck wouldnt move, and there was tranny fluid under the truck. it didnt look normal either it was more pink than red

any input on what to check or do would be great, im kindof lost :icon_cheers:

You'd better yank the tranny pan and replace the trans filter..

or have it taken to a shop, for a COMPLETE tranny flush and filter replacement.

this will be the second time replacing fluid and filter, the first time is when it lasted for two days. i thought it might end up at a shop for a complete cleaning but was hoping there might be another way. does anyone know if the torque converter has a drain plug, or does it need to be removed to drain it? thanks for the reply

Im not too knowlegeable about autos, but Its a lot of work when a full flush (and warranty if it doesnt work again) is a lot better than a "do-it yourself" in this case.

yeah i get what your sayin, definitly with the warranty part. any clue what it would run me??

It may be too late. If the trans is slipping that bad, the damage is already done. When you do a filter change on a trans you only change about 4-6 quarts of fluid. The complete system holds about 12 quarts.

so are you saying im in need of a new tranny, or would i still be able to have mine serviced?

+1. I would've had it towed to a shop, and had a full flush done right away. You probably destroyed it by driving it around with water in it.

destroyed as in not fixable, or just needs to be pulled out and taken to a shop for repair

Given enough money, any problem is fixable. But "destroyed" here means not cost effective to repair.

You can't tell for sure whether it's truly destroyed without tearing it down.

gotcha. thanks for the feedback everyone, i guess its junkyard time

ok well since i thought it was junk anyway, i filled it up with new fluid and a new filter. so far ive put 20 miles on it just to warm it up and i cant feel any slippages and there are no leaks. thought it was interesting, don't think its going to last though

Good luck with it and don't leave your self without alternative transportation.

yea i keep 5 quarts of mercon and my socket set in the truck just in case as well as the f-150 at home. thanks for the help everyone, i really appreciate it
