I was driving today and my oil pressure gauge started fluttering...Then dropped...it has done it before and people on here said that a lot of them do it. My exhuast is loud so i didnt here anything until I stopped and then i could here a rod knockin or a lifter tickin very loudly(i didnt wait to see which one)I shut it off and pulled it home. Any ideas why it would do this???? what is wrong with it??? and what will need replaced???
thanks

A common problem with the 3.0L is camshaft position sensor synchro going out. The synchro is driven by the camshaft, and the synchro drives the oil pump, and CMP. But if it has run too long without oil pressure, you will need at least bearings (crankshaft mains, and rod).

OK...how do you check to see if the Camshaft Position Sensor Synchro is out???

If you pull the sensor, you can see if the shaft in the synchro is turning when you crank the engine.

Yes, heed Bob's latest advice and pull the fuel pump fuse when checking for synchro rotation, so it CAN'T start.

It may be too late if it was knocking, meaning it's new engine time. The gear at the bottom of the synchro drives the oil pump.

This is my first 3.0...where is the cam sensor on these???
Thanks
