I recently took the water pump off my 1999 3.0 and im debating on whether to put a electric fan just keep the old one, any suggestions?

Unless your doing four wheeling or a lot of towing I would stick with the original.

I love my e-fan. No problems or complaints for 2 years now. Ask yourself this, how many new vehicles have a traditional clutch fan? (the answer is not many) Wonder why that is?

I can't answer the, how many, but if you subtract front wheel drive vehicles it may be a lot less than you indicate. I guess you could also ask why engineers use clutch drive fans when the engine is rear wheel drive if electric fans are the best.

b/c most vehicles are FWD now.....
but yeah, if your stock fan is working for ya? then debate on if its worth it for you. i'm gonna do the elec conversion on my truck. its nice for water crossings or towing or trail riding(slow speeds).

The stock works fine, i do some off roading but no towing, i guess im more interested in the added hp it might give me and maybe a improved mpg.

This argument goes round and round. Hard to find hard data. I think if there was any noticeable HP/MPG gain then the auto engineers would have done the conversion at the factory. When the electric fan runs it is not free HP (or is it quiet) as it takes alternator power to run it, but many would argue they rarely run. Why don't you do a test. Do some long term MPG calculations (minimum 10 tanks) with the stock fan and then spend the money on an electric conversion and do some more mileage checks under the same driving conditions. Let us know if you see any worthwhile difference.

Trust me. You have to replace the clutch at the same time as the water pump...sooooo...Spend that money on a junkyard fan and do it for the Ponies and silence.

90-95 taurus fans... the 3 wire ones from the 3.8L are the ones you want.. STRONG fans. a lot of jeeps use them, a lot of drag racers use them.. several of my jeep buddies are using them only wiring the low side on their jeep 4.0 w/out any overheating issues, which they had from their stock clutch fans. i'm not sure on those years but i'll look.

I guess I have to ask how you wire in the A/C system for an aftermarket electric fan? The clutch fan will automatically adjust for higher heat load from A/C condenser but electric fans usually have to be wired to control fan for A/C. I would suspect on a Taurus dual fan setup one fan is for engine cooling and the other is for A/C condenser cooling. I have a Camry where one of the fans comes on as soon as you turn on the A/C system and the same for an SUV I have with a clutch fan and separate electric fan for the A/C which also activates when A/C is switched on. I would suspect you need two relays and a hook-up to the A/C pressure switch. If one fan is designed to turn when A/C is on then there goes the quiet argument.

If you buy a thermostat kit it will have a blue wire which gets tapped into the power feed for the a/c clutch.

Its really easy to wire a 2 speed fan, use 2 relays, Low side gets a auto temp switch, Mine is wired for low speed to handle the cooling issues, high speed is wired into the AC. The benefit is the AC is very cold, even sitting still. Hayden makes a variable temp controller that when coupled with additional relays works very well with a Taurus fan setup.

The Taurus fans are a common upgrade. You'll probably want to fab up some kind of shroud if that's the route you choose. Personally, I use a factory Ford e-fan from duratec 4cyl ranger's. It's a really sturdy fan that bolts right onto our radiator and comes with a nice shroud to direct all of that airflow.

thanks guys ill look into the taurus fan, theres a couple junkyards where i live im sure i can find one for cheap, regarding the AC mine condenser is busted would that b a problem?

With just a little cutting on the Taurus fan shroud you can make it fit inside the stock Ranger shroud, just bolt the 2 together, Its what I did with mine.

Only if you want your AC to work
